Chill Subs - Magazine Stats is a browser extension that provides submission statistics for literary magazines. This section explains what data we collect through the extension, how we use it, and your rights regarding your information.
Information We Collect
When you use the Chill Subs extension, we collect:
Current Website URL
- Collected only when you click the extension icon
- Used to match the magazine website with our database
- Sent to our API at chillsubs.com
Magazine Search Queries
- When you search for a magazine by name
- Used to retrieve relevant magazine statistics
Extension Interaction Events
- Anonymous usage analytics (e.g., "extension opened", "stats viewed")
- Tracked via PostHog analytics service
- No directly identifying personal information (such as name or email) is included
Detailed Data Collection
When you click the extension icon:
- Full URL of the current page
- Page title (only on submission portals like Submittable, Duotrope)
- Magazine name extracted from page content (Submittable/Duotrope only)
Sent to chillsubs.com API:
- URL or extracted magazine name
- Anonymous usage events: "extension_opened", "extension_stats_loaded", etc.
- Domain names for statistics lookup
- No user identifiers or authentication tokens
- IP addresses may be temporarily captured in our server access logs as a technical necessity for API routing and security. We do not intentionally use your IP address for identification, profiling, or location tracking.
Stored locally:
- No data is stored locally on your device
- Extension does not persist any browsing history or user data
DOM Content Access:
- On submission portal pages (Submittable, Duotrope), the extension reads page title, meta tags, and heading elements to extract magazine names
- This happens only when you click the extension icon
- Extracted names are sent to our API for statistics lookup
Information We Do NOT Intentionally Collect
We do not intentionally collect personal information such as name, email, or address. Limited technical metadata (such as anonymized usage events) may be processed by our analytics provider solely for the purpose of improving the extension.
We do not collect:
- Browsing history beyond the current tab URL when you click the extension
- Passwords or credentials
- Form data from other websites
How We Use Your Data
Your data is used exclusively to:
1. Display submission statistics for literary magazines
2. Match website URLs to magazines in our database
3. Improve the extension through anonymous usage analytics
4. Monitor extension performance and errors
Data Storage and Retention
- URL Matching: Processed in real-time, not cached locally
- Search Queries: Processed in real-time, not cached locally
- Analytics Events: Stored by PostHog according to their retention policy
- Local Storage: The extension does not persist personal data in local storage
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party service:
PostHog (Analytics via Chill Subs Backend)
- Purpose: Anonymous usage analytics
- Data Flow: Extension → Chill Subs API → PostHog
- Data Shared: Extension interaction events (e.g., "extension_opened", "stats_loaded")
- User ID: All events use "anonymous_extension_user" - no individual tracking
- Properties Sent: domain names, magazine names (when found), event type
- The extension does not directly contact PostHog. All analytics are proxied through the Chill Subs API (chillsubs.com), which validates events and forwards them to PostHog
- Analytics data is pseudonymous, not linked to user identity, and is not used for advertising or tracking across websites

Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties except:
- PostHog for analytics (as described above)
- As required by law
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Stop using the extension at any time (uninstall removes all local data)
- Request information about data we've collected
- Request deletion of your data
Security
We implement industry-standard security measures:
- HTTPS encryption for all API communications
- Minimal data collection principles
- No storage of sensitive information
Children's Privacy
This extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Permissions Explained
The extension requests minimal permissions necessary for functionality:
- activeTab: Access the URL and content of the current tab when you click the extension icon
- scripting: Display the extension interface on the current page
- host_permissions (chillsubs.com): Communicate with our API to retrieve magazine statistics

Chill Subs complies with browser extension store policies for Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons. Specifically:
- We limit data use to providing and improving the extension's core functionality

- We do not sell or share data with data brokers or information resellers
- We do not transfer data beyond what is necessary to provide the service (PostHog for analytics, our own servers for stats lookup)
- All API communications use HTTPS encryption
