by Firefox user 13977066, 7 years agoIn the advent of forced updates being shoved down our throats due to some addons becoming unavailable and websites supporting legacy browsers more and more, this is a very similar alternative to the old, now outdated Rikaichan.
It gets the job done well enough and uses the same key bindings for the ones it has in common.
However, it lacks in quality of life compared to its predecessor.
There doesn't appear to be a way to change the font size with the text appearing a bit more bloated (and spaced) than I'd like, it removed the ability to put the frames in set corners on the screen using the "a" hotkey (I never used this personally, but was aware of it), and it doesn't allow you to change the order you "shift" through (always being word definition, kanji breakdown, names dictionary) like you could on Rikaichan.
The worst part would be that when switching to the names dictionary for Japanese, when there's so many options to fit on screen it will just make one super long column stretching off the screen instead of splitting it into two columns, effectively making half the options unreadable without zooming the page out by a good chunk.
In the end the important part is that if it works, though, which it does.

- Rated 5 out of 5by emmanuelcohen, 3 months agoThis dictionary is doing all that I could dream of. Instant recognition via mouseover, the dictionary is complete, erudite but also very simple to access if you just want a straightforward translation.
Once you look up the word, you can find the kanji decomposition. It's detailed and easy at the same time. Please try.Developer response

- Rated 5 out of 5by Shaitan Venit, 6 months agoAmazing extension, this is going to help me a lot to learn Japanese. One feature I wish it had is to display furigana over kanji when on hover. That aside, I'm glad I found this extension. Good job!

posted 7 months agoHi hhoganmc, I'm sorry to hear it's not working for you. Would you be able to contact me at info@birchill.co.jp so we can try to work out what's wrong?
You'll need to activate the add-on after pinning it to the toolbar or pressing Alt+R. I hope that helps!- Rated 5 out of 5by Boris Chiou, 7 months agoThis is very easy to use. The Japanese accent is really useful when I look up the new words and try to speak them.

- Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 14009125, a year agothe bundled font change is jarring, I'd much rather use a font that is consistent with my system. The "a" used to have a hat (not round) and the characters used to have smaller proportions, for example.
That aside... it's quite good at recognizing words.Developer response
posted a year agoThank you! That's very good feedback. I've filed an issue at https://github.com/birchill/10ten-ja-reader/issues/1799 and will see what other users think of the change.
At very least, we can restore the hat on the "a" very easily and we could add an option to use a system font too.
Update: We've just released a new version (1.19.1) which adds a setting to use system fonts. Thanks for the feedback! - Rated 5 out of 5by willow, a year agoIncredibly useful for immersion reading and it's even really decent for reading things in chinese! the wanikani/bunpro features are a nice touch too
