Privacy Policy for Browser Time
Last Updated: April 24, 2025
1. Introduction
Browser Time Beta ("the Extension") is a Chrome extension developed by Xpandable Technology Lab that displays the current time and optionally temperature on web pages. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use the Extension.
2. Information We Collect
Time Display: No data is collected for the core time display feature.
Temperature Display: The Extension collects the following information, which you voluntarily provide through the options page:
• Zip Code: Used to fetch temperature data for your location.
• Email Address: Optionally provided to access the temperature API and receive a confirmation code.
• Confirmation Code: A code provided by the API to authenticate temperature requests.
• Preferences: Settings such as temperature unit (Fahrenheit, Centigrade, or both), display options (e.g., show seconds, show temperature), and UI positioning (vertical position, horizontal alignment).
All data is stored locally on your device using Chrome's storage.local API and is not transmitted to our servers or any third party except as described below.
3. How We Use Your Information
• Zip Code: Sent to the API (https://tl1.us/cgi-bin/wproxy.cgi) to retrieve temperature data for your specified location.
• Email Address: used for authentication of “real” users.
• Confirmation Code: Sent to the API to authenticate temperature data requests and track hit counts for abuse.
• Preferences: Used to customize the Extension's display and functionality based on your settings.
4. Third-Party Services
The Extension relies on an API (https://tl1.us/cgi-bin/wproxy.cgi) to fetch temperature data and manage confirmation codes. When you enable temperature display or request a confirmation code, your zip code, email (if provided), and confirmation code (if provided) are sent to this API. We do not control the third-party API's data practices. Please review their privacy policy [insert link if available, or state "contact tl1.us for their privacy policy"] for details on how they handle your data. Underling near-time temperature data comes via API from openweathermap.org .
5. Data Storage and Security
All user-provided data (zip code, email, confirmation code, and preferences) is stored locally on your device using Chrome's storage.local API. This data is only accessible to the Extension and is not shared with us or any third party except as noted in Section 4. We implement reasonable measures to secure the Extension's code, but no system is completely secure. You can clear all stored data by uninstalling the Extension.
6. Data Sharing
We do not share your data with any parties except the API (tl1.us) as described in Section 4. Your data is not sold, rented, or shared for marketing purposes.
7. User Control
You can:
• Modify or delete your zip code, email, confirmation code, and preferences at any time via the Extension's options page.
• Clear all stored data by uninstalling the Extension through your browser's extension management settings.
8. Children's Privacy
The Extension is not intended for use by children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in the Extension's functionality or legal requirements. The updated policy will be posted at [your website URL] with a revised "Last Updated" date. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the new policy.
