Grammar and Spell Checker - LanguageTool by LanguageTooler GmbH

by Ardemus, 2 years agoAt first it seemed nice, but it's been getting in the way. At first it passively highlighted problem areas for me to review, but today it's been agressively throwing up dialogs on its own, blocking my work. It also abuses its access to my attention by marking an error but pitching it's paid service when I click on the text. It does have a good dictionary (much better than the native Firefox spell checker) but the gramar engine is stuck on pedantic. It enforces rules that aren't required unless you're writing a formal document. The last straw was when it started trying to autocomplete sentences. Today I typed, "work address:" and it threw my actual work address (and how does it know my real work address?) into the email. I ignored it but the suggestion kept popping up as I edited that part of the email. It ultimately inserted the address by itself, on a blank line, between "work address:" and the address I had already added. It even used a font style that didn't match the surounding text.

posted 2 years agoThanks for your feedback. LanguageTool doesn't autocomplete - the autocompletion came from somewhere else (e.g., Gmail or a different add-on). We also don't open dialogs automatically, all dialogs only show up when you click on an error or button. Maybe you're confusing LanguageTool with a different add-on?

If I'm wrong and it just uses normal AI and not generative AI, then it shouldn't be labeled as AI in its extension name

- Rated 1 out of 5by Wizard, 13 days agoI'm very concerned about privacy with this extension. As an example of what they collect (from their privacy policy).
Usage information (such as the date and time of visits, pages viewed, links to/from any page, and time spent in a session)
Device information (such as your internet protocol (IP) address, Internet service provider, operating system, computer model, language settings and CPU details, referrer URL, time zone information, data volume transferred, access status/ HTTP status code, and web browser type).
Inference Information about your usage of LanguageTool (such as whether you are a frequent document uploader or user of a particular feature). Location information (approximated, based on your IP address).
Almost none of this has anything to do with helping to check spelling and grammar and it goes way beyond what anyone should be willing to share to any company, let alone an extension. - Rated 5 out of 5by LosGepardoss, 13 days ago
- Rated 5 out of 5by PerooNoob, 16 days agoIt's a super useful tool, with good suggestions and straightforward to use. It's great that LT is opensource and has a decent privacy policy, especially with the premium account, which is worth every penny. LT also works with many Linux programs, like Libreoffice, making it a versatile grammar checker.
