by Firefox user 19258106, 3 months agoThe extension looks the part but has usability issues that need managing manually.
The main usability issue is that if you're connected to a VPN server and the computer goes into sleep mode then later resumes, the connection isn't refreshed/handled properly, effectively blocking traffic until you manually disconnect/reconnect. Occasionally this issues causes the GUI to become unresponsive too, requiring the extension itself to be restarted.
There's also no feedback given on the connection quality/speed of the server you're currently connected to. If it starts to feel slow, it requires manually moving to another server; there's no automatic transfer to a better equivalent server within the same country.
Not a negative mark on the extension per se - but it's worth noting that there's a growing list of websites that will detect you using a VPN (likely through matching your IP against IPs known to belong to Proton/etc.), making VPN usage for 'general' anonymous browsing more and more frustrating.
Proton VPN itself works well and provides lots of protections and connection configuration; it's just the extension that has a few issues really.

posted 3 months agoThank you for your review. Could you share more details about the connection issue? Are you able to consistently reproduce it? Which version of Firefox, as well as the Proton VPN extension do you have installed? What device are you experiencing this issue on exactly? Contact us by clicking on Help in the Proton VPN extension, then selecting 'Contact us' so we can help you troubleshoot.
On another note, some websites block known VPN IP addresses. Let us know which websites you're having trouble accessing, as well as the servers you're connected to in the process so we can help. Meanwhile, you can try switching between multiple different servers to see whether the behavior improves with some of them.
Lastly, we've documented your request regarding automatic reconnection to a faster server for future consideration.

- Rated 1 out of 5by WrolTroklr, a day agoWorks well, when it does. After using the extension for little over a few weeks, it randomly stopped actually changing my location/IP even though it says "Connected". Huge security risk, If this does happen to you, I would try disallowing and reallowing the browser to control your browser traffic, but this is a massive and unnecessary inconvenience.

- Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 19538649, 4 days agoI have Proton’s most advanced plan, including their full suite of services and the VPN. I’ve been using it for over a month and it works well. It does exactly what I expect from it.
Advice for those using Proton VPN on PC:
A small trick if you can protect more than one device with Proton. Exclude the browser from the software and let the extension handle the VPN. Your usage will be more flexible that way. - Rated 3 out of 5by SnigePippi, 5 days agoWorked mostly fine the last 3 weeks. Now I've had to disable it as it is blocking my connection. Hope it will be solved, but it's turned off for now.

posted 5 days agoThat doesn't sound right. Would you mind describing the issue further? Are you experiencing no internet access while connected to the extension? If so, are you receiving any error messages perhaps? We'd be more than happy to help you troubleshoot, but we need some basic details to work with. - Rated 1 out of 5by fulluphigh, 7 days agoHonestly the worst extension I've ever used. Idk, maybe all vpn extensions are garbage, but holy hell this is garbage. Are they even trying? Will constantly crash in such a way that you have to completely disable it to use your browser in any way shape or form, and completely uninstall it and then reinstall it to get it to work again. Sometimes even after disabling and re-enabling it, it'll still stop working a minute later.
And don't misunderstand me. By constantly, I mean literally every time you use it after your computer has slept. Honestly, at this point I'm giving up, uninstalling it, and reporting it to mozilla, for breaking the browser.
And don't give me the "That doesn't sound right, can you share more details" bull, there are literally a hundred reviews saying the exact same thing. Try using your own product and figuring it out on your own.Developer response
posted 6 days agoSorry to hear that. Our team is aware of the issue and working on a fix, although we currently don’t have a specific timeframe that we can share. We’ve made sure to document your report for further investigation while this is being sorted out. Aby rozwiązać ten problem należy wyłączyć rozszerzenie i następnie ponownie je włączyć. To bardzo upierdliwe.

- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 14322377, 11 days agoWorks as you'd expect, and the UI is very responsive, albeit bare-bones feature wise. An option to pin or favorite specific countries to have them show up at the top of the list, or profiles, would be nice (but that's what the standalone app is for I suppose).

Can be blocked by ISPs however so you won't be able to use it in all situations. Would be nice if it had a way to attempt to connect to unblocked server IPs and report blocked attempts so Proton can continue to provide a great service.
