Reviews for 10ten Japanese Reader (Rikaichamp)
10ten Japanese Reader (Rikaichamp) by Birchill

by N R, 2 years agoI installed this extension as an alternative to RIkaikun as someone trying to transition from using Chromium-based browsers, back to firefox. 10ten basically acts the same, which I appreciate, but my one issue makes it nearly impossible to use: it shows way, way, way too many definitions.
Whereas Rikaikun shows you only the most relevant definition for the kanji compound or kana-word on hover, 10ten seems to show you every single definition for every kanji in the compound AND THEN the kana that comprising the reading of that kanji. It ALSO will take katana or hiragana words, and break them down into their individual kana and then start spitting out unrelated kanji readings so the list explodes to the point of being unusable.
For example, here is a screenshot of what I get when I hover over the word チェンソー. Whereas Rikaikun would simply give me the result for チェンソー, 10ten gives me the results for チェ、血、地、針、千…endlessly going down each kanji with "chi" as a reading.

What about お披露目?Same problem, where Rikaikun simply brings up the definition for that word alone, 10ten floods the screen with the definitions for 尾、御、緒…

Other entries that were especially bothersome: に関して brings up results for 二、荷,煮 and goes on... Kanji compounds like 実際 Are hammered by every possible definition for the usage of 実、Same with any word beginning with 人、No matter how relevant all of those usages Could possibly be to the compound in use.
Turning off dictionaries until I only have a single one turned on seems to do nothing to change these results.
I really do like this extension and how easy to use and read is. I'm sorry for such a long review. I just really wanted to lay this issue out as clearly as possible, because I do think it makes the extension much harder for people to use.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

posted 2 years agoUpdate: This is now fixed in version 1.15. Thank you for your feedback!
Hi N R! Thank you very much for your review! That's very helpful. I agree the entries listed in those example are not useful.
I think we can hide many of them, or at least make it so that you need to scroll the popup to view them.
Unfortunately, sometimes those shorter matches are useful. e.g. when looking up 非の打ち所がない it's useful to be able to look up 非 at the same time so I suppose we will need to be clever about when to hide the extra matches and make the behavior configurable.
I have filed an issue to track this problem here: https://github.com/birchill/10ten-ja-reader/issues/1036
Thank you once again for your helpful review. I hope we can make 10ten more useful to you in the near future.

posted 3 months agoHi hhoganmc, I'm sorry to hear it's not working for you. Would you be able to contact me at info@birchill.co.jp so we can try to work out what's wrong?
You'll need to activate the add-on after pinning it to the toolbar or pressing Alt+R. I hope that helps!- Rated 5 out of 5by Boris Chiou, 3 months agoThis is very easy to use. The Japanese accent is really useful when I look up the new words and try to speak them.

- Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 14009125, 8 months agothe bundled font change is jarring, I'd much rather use a font that is consistent with my system. The "a" used to have a hat (not round) and the characters used to have smaller proportions, for example.
That aside... it's quite good at recognizing words.Developer response
posted 8 months agoThank you! That's very good feedback. I've filed an issue at https://github.com/birchill/10ten-ja-reader/issues/1799 and will see what other users think of the change.
At very least, we can restore the hat on the "a" very easily and we could add an option to use a system font too.
Update: We've just released a new version (1.19.1) which adds a setting to use system fonts. Thanks for the feedback! - Rated 5 out of 5by willow, 9 months agoIncredibly useful for immersion reading and it's even really decent for reading things in chinese! the wanikani/bunpro features are a nice touch too

posted a year agoOh, I'm so sorry to hear it's not updating for you. Can I ask which region you are in? It should work but perhaps you are encountering DNS / Firewall / Proxy issues? Please feel free to contact me on info@birchill.co.jp. I would love to help fix this problem. Sorry for the trouble! - Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 18268293, a year agoVery nice extension that helps me a lot with my Japanese learning! But I've met a problem that sometimes when I look up a word, there are so many homonym words that I cannot find the word I want in the list, which just leaves the ellipsis "..." at the bottom. How can I expand it for more results? Take the conjunction「し」 as an example. I could only get all irrelevant words 「死」「四」「市」etc. except that very conjunction word. I'd like to know how to solve this troublesome problem.
Also, I wonder whether more language versions like Chinese/Korean will be added into 10ten reader, for my mother tongue is not any European language and sometimes it is difficult for me to understand some obscure English definitions LoL.
Thank you for reading my comment.Developer response
posted a year agoHi! Sorry, I didn't see your comment there. Thanks for reporting the problem with 「し」. I'm sorry it's causing you trouble. I've filed an issue (https://github.com/birchill/10ten-ja-reader/issues/1657) to look into fixing this. Thanks and sorry again for the trouble.
I hope to add Vietnamese definitions at some point. If you know of any sources that match Chinese or Korean definitions to the JMdict dictionary entries I would love to add them. Thank you! - Rated 5 out of 5by isyasad, a year ago
