by Scoox, a year agoThis is very good. I have loads of tabs open simultaneously and was having problems with high memory usage. This plugin instantly took care of the problem. The configuration can seem a bit daunting at first but it's worth taking the time to go through and understand every setting to get the the most out of this add-in.
I notice certain "special tabs" are not being discarded, for example, Sidebery folder tabs, Firefox Preferences pages, and add-on options pages. Regarding Sidebery folder tabs, perhaps they are being seen as active all the time because Sidebery is active and those tabs are part of it? This doesn't bother me, but I thought I'd mention it in case it's not intentional.
My only tiny criticism would be the lack of documentation, since some settings are somewhat cryptic especially if you are not a techie. Eventually I managed to figure out almost every setting through trial and error.
I'd like to sugges a floating Save Options button that's always visible, thereby eliminating the need to scroll down to the bottom each time settings need saving. This would make experimentation less time-consuming.
In short: A fantastic add-on. Big thank you to the author/authors!

It automatically puts inactive tabs to sleep, freeing up memory and reducing CPU use without closing anything. When I switch back, the tab just reloads right where I left off. It’s super lightweight, easy to use, and works quietly in the background. Perfect for people who keep lots of tabs open but don’t want their computer to slow down. Simple, effective, and really useful.

- Rated 5 out of 5by thajose, 2 months agoBeen a Firefox user since it was an alpha release. I've never written a review for any extension until now. This extension made Firefox on Ubuntu usable for me again. I typically have several tabs opened at all time. After 12 or so, Firefox would become nearly unusable, particularly if any videos began playing in those tabs. Auto Tab Discard has made it to where I can have several dozen tabs open and everything runs fine. To the developer, thank you so much for this.
One thing I will point out is that the name is a bit misleading - No tabs appear to be discarded, thrown away, or deleted. They are just put in a suspended state and removed from active memory. At one time, I thought Firefox had a feature like this built in however, if that still exists, it no longer works very well. Auto Tab Discard is an absolute must for me now. - Rated 5 out of 5by Michael Rabinovsky, 2 months agoI think the description says it all, but I'll add that the benefits of this addon are immense, and it is amazing to me that it isn't built into the browser. This addon turned my old laptop from unusable to nice to browse on. In addition, as a heavy tabber with hundreds of tabs open, it allows me to run more memory-intensive software on my desktop without closing my browser.

- Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 17564609, 2 months agoIt appears that the AI-powered tab grouping of Firefox keeps this extension from being effective.
You need to turn off 'Use AI to suggest tabs and a name for tab groups' in Settings > General.
The extension discards tabs more than Tab Unloading, a function of Firefox and is more flexible.
I still needs it. - Rated 5 out of 5by whatever, 2 months ago

Useful for my potatoe, but the options do not take effect for me for some reason which would be super helpful otherwise. Thank you. Shall revise the review when I can get that working. - Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 17628517, 3 months agoGood, but firefox now has built-in tab discard/unload feature, so in fact you don't need this anymore.

The settings are a bit complicated.
I could have the option to have more than one set of criteria, before closing tabs. Eg. closing tabs after 20 min, when having more than 10 open, but also closing tabs after 10 min, when having more than 25 open. - Rated 5 out of 5by Artem, 3 months ago
