About this extension
ExactNote is designed to create, view, and organize annotations on web pages. After text is highlighted, short notes can be added. In addition, pictures can be annotated with red boxes, arrows, and text. Afterwards, these annotations can be viewed by anyone on that web page who has access to the created annotation. Furthermore, these annotations can be organized and shared from the ExactNote website or sidebar.
From a privacy perspective, ExactNote can operate in three modes:
1. Completely disabled - No user data is transmitted, collected, or used.
2. Anonymous mode - Public annotations can be viewed. In order to provide this functionality, webpage urls are transmitted. This information is discarded after the annotations are sent back to the user.
3. Logged in mode - Annotations can be created, viewed, organized, and shared. In order to provide this functionality, the user must signup with an email address, username, and password. During the annotation creation process, the webpage being annotated, annotation text, and screenshot of the annotation and webpage are sent to ExactNote servers. The screenshot is limited to the webpage being annotated and is used to provide context to users with whom the data is shared. Once an account is created, the user can logout and switch to anonymous or disabled mode at any time.
