About this extension
The Fake News Detector extension empowers users to combat misinformation with AI-powered fact-checking. It integrates seamlessly into your browsing experience through a popup interface and context menu.
How It Works:
Popup Interface: Accessible via a toolbar icon, the popup allows users to input any claim (e.g., news headlines or statements). It sends the claim to a remote API for analysis, returning a verdict (True, False, or Uncertain), a confidence percentage, and up to three credible source links.
Context Menu: Right-clicking selected text on any webpage triggers a 'Fact-check this text' option. This sends the text to a development API and displays an alert with the verdict, useful for quick checks during development.
Future Highlighting: The content script (content-script.js) is designed to eventually highlight suspicious sentences on webpages, enhancing real-time detection (this feature is under development).
Technical Details:
The extension uses Manifest V3 with background scripts (background.js) for context menu handling, content scripts for future webpage interaction, and popup scripts (popup.js) for the UI. It requests permissions for 'activeTab', 'scripting', 'storage', and 'contextMenus', along with host permissions for the APIs.
Icons (16x16, 48x48, 128x128 pixels) are included in the assets folder, and the UI is styled with a dark theme via styles.css.
This extension is ideal for news enthusiasts, researchers, and anyone seeking to verify online information, with ongoing improvements planned.
