Semantic Scholar does not collect or transmit any information unless you actively use the add-on.

When you click the Semantic Scholar add-on, it requests from the current webpage any available URL, title and bibliographic information and sends the information to the Semantic Scholar API. This request also includes, as available, the user agent, IP address, and account information just as if you had visited Semantic Scholar in your browser. Semantic Scholar stores this information in our server logs indefinitely for internal use only.

If the current webpage is an article, Semantic Scholar responds to the request with data about the article including the Semantic Scholar URL that corresponds to the article. When you click on the Semantic Scholar URL in the Semantic Scholar add-on, the domain name of the webpage you were previously on is recorded as a UTM parameter in the resulting URL for referral tracking purposes. If the Semantic Scholar add-on is used to execute a query, then the search query is sent to Semantic Scholar when you click on the Semantic Scholar search button and is recorded in the resulting Semantic Scholar URL.
