Reviews for Simple Tab Groups
Simple Tab Groups by Drive4ik

by RogueKitsune, 8 years agoLike other I am switching over from Quicksaver's Tab Groups, so there will be plenty of comparisons to it.
The Good...
Pretty much everything UI related is better compared to Tab Groups. I like being able to set an image or colour to group. The menus and such also seem much more responsive.
The Ok...
I like that there are keyboard shortcuts but I would really like to be able to change the keybinding back to "ctrl + `" and "ctrl + shift + `"
The Bad...
Migrating from Quicksaver's Tab Groups to Simple Tab Groups was a bit rough. First I made sure to "back up" my tab groups by bookmarking them in folder named after their group. Then I installed Simple Tab Groups and disabled Tab Groups. After restarting only a few of my tabs showed up in a group even though the group had a tab count 563. So I restarted Firefox again. This time all my tabs showed up but I now had two groups with each with a copy of all my tabs. Repeating opening and closing Firefox continued the duplication of the group even after I started moving tabs into groups. To fix this I had to close all open tabs and restart. After that everything started working fine.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that this addon doesn't really like the about:* pages. Opening, for example about:config, does not bind it to a specific group instead it acts more like a pinned tab. In addition about:newtab does not load correctly when coming back to it (search bar, top sites, etc. don't show up)
The Ugly...
I know nothing can be done about it at this time but I still have to complain about it. I hate how this addon switches between groups. Essentially all the "current" tabs are closed and then new tabs are opened with the URLs from the other group.
TLDR
Good addon, but has some areas that need improvement
Disclaimer:
I only run nightly builds of Firefox, so there is a chance the issues I saw were caused by some change/defect in Firefox.

Developer response
posted 8 years agoPlease update add-on to latest version (v2.2)
In this version I fix duplicate groups/tabs.
About "about:config" and etc.: this is not supported bu Firefox WebExtentions API
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/WebExtensions/API/tabs/create
For security reasons, in Firefox, this may not be a privileged URL. So passing any of the following URLs will fail:
chrome: URLs
javascript: URLs
data: URLs
file: URLs (i.e., files on the filesystem. However, to use a file packaged inside the extension, see below)
privileged about: URLs (for example, about:config, about:addons, about:debugging). Non-privileged URLs (e.g., about:blank) are allowed.
The New Tab page (about:newtab) can be opened if no value for URL is provided.
Version 2.1 and above has option to fast group switching (in options page)
Thanks for your feedback!

- Rated 2 out of 5by MartinThomas, a day agoI originally gave this 5 stars, but as time went by it got more and more erratic. Maybe because I had many tabs open?
More and more often, large numbers of tabs would vanish; sometimes several groups would lose most of their tabs. I could usually get most of them back from the backups, but the tabs I had added within the last day would not come back. - Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 19193128, 9 days agoFantastic extension. Makes managing tabs and tab groups a breeze. A few issues:
1. The extension makes backups in my download folder, which is not great since I like to keep my downloads folder clean.
2. Does not yet play well with the new in-built tab grouping feature from Firefox. Hoping this will be resolved soon.
3. The black icon color blends in with my black window color, which makes it nearly impossible to see the button.
4. On first install, the existing tabs don't integrate with the extension and need to be manually moved in.
Those aside, It's such a great extension, easily one of my favourites. Thanks! - Rated 5 out of 5by elsenhell, 10 days ago

Would rate 5, but after the latest Firefox update, the tabs that are not in a group, are not visible at the extension, unless you add them to a group.
So, if you open a new ungrouped tab and close out of Firefox, it disappears, since it is hidden and it is not in a group.
Also, when you close out of Firefox, some tabs, sometimes gets ungrouped, and since you cannot see ungrouped tabs anymore, you got to find them from Firefox's drop down menu, since they are hidden. - Rated 5 out of 5by Alex, 15 days ago

- Rated 5 out of 5by Alex Alex, 22 days agoRecently Firefox added its own tab grouping feature that could synergize really well with this extension, but unfortunately there's a bug:
When you create a Firefox group it also creates group collapse button for it, and when you switch to another STG group, it hides the grouped tabs but not that collapse button.
Hope it gets patched, because it's a bit janky and annoying.
- Rated 5 out of 5by Rusty, a month agoIn the past week or two I keep losing all my settings for this. I did (belatedly) create a back up .json, however even that, as of today, is not being recognized as valid...
Hoping this is seen and dev, or other users, can offer insight, as this is one of my most valued extensions.
Cheers 🍻

With that being said, I love the add-on and appreciate the QoL improvements it brings to my internet. Can't imagine not having it at this point. - Rated 5 out of 5by aadam21, a month agoThis is THE tab manager I was looking for in Firefox. It took a bit to adjust and I thought I preferred the tab grouping I've used in chromium based browsers. But this is so much cleaner, easier to organize and reason with, and maintain a solid separation of concerns with tab grouping.

- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 19063784, 2 months agoI love this extension. It allows me to focus on work one tab group at a time vs. having a million tabs open at once.
- Rated 5 out of 5by Andreusd, 2 months agoFixfox devs should have taken inspiration from this extension instead of copying chrome groups. This extension is truly life changing.
