- Rated 3 out of 5by Andrei Lavrenov, 7 years agoUpdate 2022: The new default behavior is to show a menu popup when you click the addon button instead of the "manage groups" overview, and I cannot find a way to switch it back, making this addon much less useful to my workflow.
To the developer: It would be amazing if you could add a toggle in the settings that would make the addon button in the toolbar immediatly open the "manage groups" window instead of opening the popup.
2018: It works wonders, and is a great replacement for the pre-Quantum tab group add-on.Developer response

Please, update Firefox to latest version v61 and after that update addon to STG v3.0 (not experimental). In this version I implement hide tabs api, switch between groups and not close tabs - Rated 3 out of 5by e-motiv, 7 years agoGreat add-on. However, there are some issues with it, that makes it very annoying for me. Not sure if it's related to other add-ons (such as Session Manager), but here they are:
- "Move tab to" menu is in a sub-menu (takes too much time and precise mouse accuracy)
- Does not accept local (non-internet) tabs. As a web designer, this really sucks.
- After switching group, all tabs are loaded. I don't want that.
- Tabs disappear sometimes (not a lot and not sure when)
- It forgets a lot in which tab group you were last time and you end up with a copy of all your tabs in a non-group tab. (Probably after restarting Firefox, not sure)
To the developer: I appreciate your efforts! I really do. The rating just reflects my "annoyment" and is no reflection to you or your efforts.Developer response

In this version I implement hide tabs api, switch between groups and not close tabs - Rated 3 out of 5by rustymonkey, 7 years agoThis is a great addon, but I'm sticking with an older version because the current version gives it permission to "Access your data for all websites".
I realize that this permission is being used to create site thumbnails, but would it be possible to create a version that doesn't include thumbnails so that such a broad level of access isn't required?Developer response

I hope they fix it fast! Thanks a lot!

- Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 13856192, 7 years ago[Update: just noticed that Simple Tab Groups (STG) was updated today - to v2.4.8. This is according to FF\Recent Updates, which also states "Sorry, but there was an error loading the release notes". Might any of these factors be something to do with my total loss of all tabs and groups!?!? Seems I'm having Certificate issues in FF now also. Concidence? Mmh]
OK. In principle this add-on is exactly what's required: and easy way to switch between groups of tabs.
By this I mean it should be like a "bookmarking plus" process, whereby a group of tabs is opened, new tabs become part of that group, and all tabs are auto-saved immediately as such. In this way, the tab "Group" is kind of similar in concept to a bookmark "Folder" except the latter is wholly maintained manually (time consuming, error prone, but safe!).
Managing tabs in groups (Moving etc.) is then required, as is naming the groups. This is achieved for the most part (but could be a bit more streamlined re the deepening menus!?).
This system is good, and users - including me - are becoming highly reliant on this add-on for everyday use. Great!
But when a user looses 100's of tabs that were in numerous groups (yep - like me!), it means there's something fundamentally wrong with the design.
I am aware of the Firefox bugs mentioned in various places, but this add-on needs a solid, fully-tested means of automatically backing up groups of tabs. In my case, Win10 glitched and put apps in a semi-disabled state, so MS have caused this, but still...
Having no obvious means to recover tabs is a REAL pain. I do have a manual backup of 2-3 weeks ago, but that's way out of date even after 1 hour of serious browsing, working, researching etc. etc.).
IMO, I don't see the need for 'live' or always open tabs when switching groups. Keep it simple I say. I group tabs (or did before it all went awol) by 'project' and by 'work mode' (e.g. "MX5 rebuild" and "Web Training"
etc.)
So my advice is to set a clear requirement spec and stick to it! Get it working and really reliable (users will help!!). Then... see what users want. A lot of good work has gone into this Addon and it's potentially brilliant, but it's popularity will turn to hatred with no crash recovery options. Crashes happen (MS!) and are OK actually (what!?!) as long as they're not too often (a sad state of current day software running under Windows, but that's modern life for ya!).
I hope the developer can assist me (and others!) and I can recover my groups, but otherwise I can't afford another "total loss" and will have to ditch this add-on :(
Best wishes peeps //LDeveloper response

Feature wise, there's everything I need and it is evolving rapidly.
Unfortunately, I experience some bugs which make it a bit too unreliable atm :
- Sometime some "random" tabs groups are created (not by me). They did not come from new windows.
- When I switch from one group to another, some tabs switch to the new group (not all of them... just a few).
- Some tabs can't be moved to another group (with an error message explaining the operation is impossible)
- When switching to another group, sometime I get an error message warning that the current tabs will be closed. Don't know why but very annoying.
I can't confirm a 100%, but it seems these problems concern only tabs with URLs on my localhost or with local HTML files.
I should make more tests to confirm though.Developer response

- Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 13723510, 7 years agoI have the same issue as another reviewer below. I'm in a tab group (Main), I add some new tabs. I go to switch to a different group and it warns me 'open tabs will be closed'. If I switch groups then go back to Main the new tabs are not there anymore. I don't understand how to sync or to make it save newly added tabs? Thanks...

posted 7 years agoPlease, update Firefox to latest version v61 and after that update addon to STG v3.0 (not experimental) - Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 13698407, 7 years agoHi, thank you for this valuable extension.
I just started using it yesterday. Today, when I open the menu and click Manage Groups, the Manage Groups tab opens, but the groups are not shown, I refreshed but still they don't appear, though they are still on the menu list and I can switch between them from there alright. I have 8 groups with a total of like 100 tabs. What could be the problem?
One more thing, there's one review below (to which you replied with screenshots) about when moving several tabs, scrolling down to the bottom inside Group A to pick a tab, then move it to Group B, Group A scrolls back up to the top automatically, which means you have to scroll down again and again in Group A to pick other tabs. This is somewhat annoying and i believe your reply there did not address the exact issue.
Finally, in the Manage Groups tab, I hope you could add the ability to select several tabs and several groups together by pressing the Shift or Ctrl keys while selecting, that would help reorganize things faster.
Thank you.Developer response

Shift or Ctrl keys I will add in future versions.
Thanks for your feedback - Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 13688369, 7 years agoI installed this add-on to replace the Quicksaver add-on so I have to compare this with the Quicksaver add-on.
What I liked is the coloring and the UIs.
But I have some serious issues with this add-on:
The way how it works: Every tab is saved as an URL like "moz-extension://...url=...". When you switch tabs, the tabs of the current group are closed and tabs of the new group are opened. If you click on the tab it takes an additional time to load the tab.
This process costs a lot of time if you have many tabs.
It took me about 10-20 minutes to switch a tab group - to be fair, that one specific tab group had about 2500 tabs which is a lot.
The second big issue is that you lose all your tabs if you uninstall the add-on:
Actually I still have my tabs, but they are stored with the URL "moz-extension://...." and therefore my opened tabs are practically unsuable, but also the history is. Now I have to write my own plugin to remove that prefix from the URL and hopefully I can work again.
Normally I would rate it one star because it was practically unusable for me but to be fair having 2500 open tabs I am not a normal user and I guess there are technical limitations that prevent the tabs to be "hidden" and you have to do it that way with the URL prefixes.Developer response
posted 7 years agoIf you are "not a normal user", then you should understand that I currently do not have the ability to hide tabs because of the limitations of the Firefox WebExtensions API.
If you are "not a normal user", you could go into the settings and remove the checkbox "Enable fast group switching" - and this will disable the functionality that you did not like so much, namely: the URL like "moz-extension://...url=...". You have 2500 tabs - I understand what you have a problem.
About the fact that when you delete the extension there are tabs with the prefix moz-extension - this bug I'll postfix, thank you for finding it.
Thanks for your feedback - Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 13666862, 7 years agoIt reloads all the pages as soon as we switch tabs and freezes all the website in any group which is inactive there by not allowing any process to work.

- Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 13590388, 7 years agoI had a shitload of tabs, that was the idea to get something like the old tab groups. I just started sorting out, and wanted to check the new group. When I changed back, it started to load all of my tabs, filling the memory. It wasn't fun.

- Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 13244794, 7 years agoIn general, I like it -- but there's one drawback. As others have noted, every time you switch to a new group. the tabs in that group reload. It slows everything and is pretty annoying. Also, it would be great if it were possible to rename each group.

- Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 10151302, 7 years agoThis looks like it'll be a good add on when/if tabs can remain open and don't need to be reloaded when switching between tab groups. I, however won't be using this until then.

- Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 13512668, 7 years agoWorks as expected, only thing I would like to see as mentioned in other reviews, is the option that pages do not have to reload until clicked, or that they are cached and don't have to reload.
- Rated 3 out of 5by Yudi Supriyadi, 7 years agoThis is what I wanted but it will great if you change the behavior to open only activated tab instead of reopen all when users select a group.
- Rated 3 out of 5by Firefox user 12424194, 7 years agoIf I move a tab between two windows, the tab didn't auto add in group, until I press create a new tab(ctrl+T).
