Tab Count Icon by lllusion3418

by jagman, 6 years agoIn performance I would have rated this add-on a 10 stars, BUT, I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES, WASTED LOTS OF TIME in its "display". It is confusing and I can not get it to work [displaying the the count tab only ONE WAY.] WHITE NUMBER, NO BACKGROUND. All I get is a WHITE number when the options appear to be able to do more to make the count more visible. It is the fastest, most accurate, but the COUNT is not as visible as it could be IF IT performed as it seems it should.

posted 6 years agoYou can open a issue on github if you want to, but from what you've written here:
If you're using icon mode: white text and transparent background seem to work for me
If you're using badge mode: this mode was more of an afterthought - there seem to be better addons out there for this case. No badge background isn't possible (though I could implement a transparent icon underneath) - the API only allows opaque colors. Setting the badge text color separately has also only been supported since Firefox 63
maybe you could clarify what exactly you're trying to do which isn't working

- Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 14660260, 3 months agoGreat extension. Also add a view to show Non hidden tabs and All tabs at same time e.g. 87/687. I use "Simple Tab Groups" which hides the tabs not in the group, this feature will be great for such cases.

- Rated 5 out of 5by alex-che, 6 months agoJust works and has large customizable font. That's all I need.
- Rated 5 out of 5by Brixter, 7 months agoThis is the best tab counter icon because the number display is big.
- Rated 5 out of 5by Makoto, 7 months agoRequest: I'd like an option to show the number of tabs excluding pinned tabs.
- Rated 4 out of 5by Shajirr, 8 months agoIn another FF instance addon did show up.
It works, however there are some issues:
a) In badge mode, it can't even display 4 numbers, 4th number is cut off
b) In icon mode it can display 4 numbers, but barely, the numbers are very small. There is a large amount of wasted empty space around them that is unused, even with "margin" setting set to zero.Developer response
posted 8 months agoI'm assuming this is unfortunately the same issue as here:
https://github.com/lllusion3418/webext_tab_number/issues/7
i.e. there's probably not much that I could do on my end to fix this because it's fundamentally a limitation with Firefox (I could warn about this in the addon description or something like that but that's about it)
Solution / workaround (see issue link above):
1. click on extension button in toolbar ("puzzle piece button")
2. right click on this extension's entry and select "pin to toolbar"
3. if it's still not visible, make sure there's enough space in toolbar
Edit: in response to your edited review:
(a) that's unfortunately a limitation with the Webextension API, there's nothing that can be done about that. "Any number of characters can be passed, but only about four can fit in the space."
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Add-ons/WebExtensions/API/browserAction/setBadgeText
(b) since the icon is (has to be) square (it can't be made any bigger), the only thing this extension could do differently is, it could use split the number in two rows. But this would conflict with the ability to display both the tabs in only the current window as well as the total number - in two rows. Visually, i don't like that option very much to be honest. - Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 16485135, 8 months ago
- Rated 5 out of 5by zpangwin, 9 months agoLove this addon. The large size (full toolbar icon height compared to many other 'tab count' addons using 1/2 of that height) is awesome. Being able to change the color so that it gives higher contrast on darker themes is also especially nice.
Not part of the addon itself, but for anyone else who likes using Firefox's Menu Bar (F10 + View > Menu Bar), it's also worth noting that you can go into the "Customize Toolbar" mode and drag this addon up to the Menu bar (I also add separators to get it to appear on the right-side of the window, below and immediately to the left of the minimize/maximize/close buttons on Windows/Linux). I find that between the large icon size, the customizable colors, and placing it up there, it stands out really nicely and is super visible at a glance. I use a bright (2nd row of color palette) purple and find that works really nicely for me on a dark theme while still being somewhat readable if I briefly end up on a lighter theme. - Rated 5 out of 5by Hasan Tahsin, a year ago

- Rated 4 out of 5by Ross Z, 4 years agoExcellent addon. I just finished testing every single other tab counter addon on AMO looking for who would let me customize color and size (viewing from about 10ft away on a 50" TV set to 1920x1080 so bigger fonts help).
'Tab Counter Plus by Oriol Brufau' had slightly more options than this one, but size wasn't one of them. The font on TCI was about twice as big ("Icon" mode with Icon size as 32px).
I actually was trying to make the icon size even larger than this but entering higher values doesn't seem to do anything (it seems to stay the same size for 20 or 32 or 64px - I can only make it smaller). I suspect this may be a limitation of WebExtensions or the button grid that the addon has to work with.
Between allowing for the custom font color and size, this addon has beat out all the others for what I want (even though I still want it to be bigger lol)
