Thank you for using Narrative Reader! This privacy policy explains what information the Narrative Reader Chrome Extension ("the Extension," "we," "us," or "our") handles and how it is used. Your privacy is important to us.

1. Information We Do Not Collect

Narrative Reader is designed with privacy as a core principle. We do not collect, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information (PII) about you or your browsing activity. This includes:

Your name, email address, or other contact information.

Your browsing history or the specific URLs you visit.

Any data you type into websites.

Your IP address or unique device identifiers.

1. Information the Extension Accesses Locally

To provide its functionality, the Extension needs to access certain information locally on your computer while you are using it:

Web Page Content: When you activate the Extension on a web page, it accesses the content (text, images, HTML structure) of that specific active tab. This is necessary to extract the main article content using the integrated Readability.js library and reformat it for the reader view. This page content is processed locally within your browser and is not stored, transmitted, or shared by the Extension.

Extension Settings: You can customize the Extension's theme, animation speed, TTS voice, and other preferences. These settings are saved using Chrome's built-in storage (chrome.storage.sync). This storage mechanism syncs your settings across your devices if you are logged into your Google account in Chrome, but we, the developers, do not have access to these settings. They are stored within your browser's profile or your Google account's synced data.

Available TTS Voices: The Extension accesses the list of text-to-speech voices available in your browser/operating system solely to populate the voice selection dropdown in the settings. This list is not stored or transmitted.

1. How Information is Used

The information accessed locally is used solely for the core functionality of the Extension:

Page content is used to generate the decluttered reader view.

Settings are used to apply your chosen theme, speed, and other preferences.

The TTS voice list is used to allow you to select a voice for read-aloud functionality.

1. Data Storage

Page Content: Not stored. Processed ephemerally during activation.

Settings: Stored locally by your browser using chrome.storage.sync.

1. Data Sharing

We do not share any data accessed or processed by the Extension with any third parties.

1. Third-Party Libraries

Readability.js: The Extension includes Mozilla's Readability.js library locally within its package. This library is used to process page content locally. It does not make external network requests or transmit data.

Google Fonts: The Extension may load fonts from Google Fonts via CSS (@import url). Your browser's interaction with Google Fonts is subject to Google's privacy policy. The Extension itself does not send any user data to Google Fonts.

1. Permissions

The Extension requests the following permissions, solely for its intended functionality:

activeTab: Allows the Extension to run only when you explicitly click its icon, on the currently active tab.

scripting: Allows the Extension to inject its content script (content.js, styles.css) into the active tab to modify the page and display the reader view.

storage: Allows the Extension to save your settings locally using chrome.storage.sync.

commands: Allows the definition of a keyboard shortcut to toggle the reader.

1. Security

We take reasonable precautions to protect the information handled by the Extension, primarily by minimizing data access and performing all core processing locally within your browser.

1. Children's Privacy

The Extension is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children under 13.

1. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by updating the version number and potentially adding a note in the extension description or options page. Your continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the new policy.
