Does not work! Typing \ after a vowel gives different accents but not all and seldom the normal Spanish accents. For example a\ with \ repeated does not give á.

Ah? Can you tell me what you have in your settings? If you're trying to use it for Spanish, you should copy the settings I showed in the info for Spanish, and that should work.
These are the settings that should work for you:
