Local Translate AI is a Firefox extension for translating text with a local LLM hosted by llama.cpp. It also supports OpenAI-compatible APIs, the Anthropic Messages API, and Google Translate.

When you use llama.cpp, translation stays on your device. When you configure a cloud API, the selected text or page content is sent to that endpoint.

For local translation, prepare Ollama, llama.cpp, or LM Studio with a local translation model, or another inference engine that exposes an OpenAI-compatible API. We recommend plamo-2-translate-gguf for Japanese-English translation. For cloud translation, configure an API key and model name for your chosen provider.
