TextMark Privacy Policy

Philosophy: TextMark is built with a "Local-First" and "Privacy-by-Design" philosophy. We believe your digital knowledge belongs to you and should never be tracked or sold.

1. Data Collection: TextMark does NOT collect, store, or transmit any personal information, browsing history, or highlights to any external servers. No account or email is required to use the extension.
2. Data Storage & Integrity:
   All highlights, notes, and tags are stored exclusively in your browser's local storage (on your device). This data never leaves your computer.
   Data Health: The extension uses local cryptographic verification (HMAC-SHA256) to ensure your data remains healthy and protected against accidental corruption.
3. Permissions & Usage:
   Storage: To save highlights and settings locally.
   Tabs / Scripting: To display the contextual toolbar and render highlights on the pages you visit.
   SidePanel / Sidebar: To provide a dedicated space for organizing and searching your research.
   Management: Used solely to facilitate a secure uninstallation process and trigger automated backups.
   Host Permissions: To enable functionality on the specific websites you choose to annotate.
4. Automated Security Backups: For your protection, TextMark includes a "Safety Net" feature that triggers an automated local JSON export of your data before uninstallation, preventing accidental data loss.
5. Third-Party Services: We do not use any third-party analytics, trackers, advertising networks, or cloud services.
6. User Rights: You have absolute control over your data. You can edit, delete, or export your highlights at any time. Uninstalling the extension will remove all local data associated with it (unless you choose to keep the automated security backup).
