Backgroundimage and link-tiles work. I was unable to set icons and without it just looks dull. Not useable for me.

Thank you for your feedback, I have updated the extension to include a How-to guide on where to find and use icons. The how-to is located by clicking the i next to the icon text box when adding a new favorite and is also shown on first use of the extension.

If you would like to give the extension another go please install version 1.41 or higher.
