The most underrated Context Search Add-On.

This severe review follows:
1. Years of usage of Context Search < 6
2. 3 weeks of usage of Context Search 6
3. A few days of usage of ContextSearch-web-ext
4. 1 person-week of contributions to contextual search extensions, mostly to this one
5. Thorough consideration.

"Upgrading" to version 6 turned a satisfied user into a dissatisfied ex-user.

The long version is available in ticket #436 of ContextSearch-web-ext’s issue tracker (titled "I wish you wouldn't copy so many features from other developer's work"). If you want to spare yourself from a ½-hour read of the gory details:
1. This extension is proprietary and developed by a single person, who calls himself a hobbyist.
2. It is unclear if that person’s distribution of this software is legal.
3. This extension brings significant value, but in exchange for important "adoption costs" (time spent installing, maintaining, configuring and mastering).
4. The 215 issue reports against this extension were just made private.

If you just thought there would be a Firefox extension for that and figured you would be up and running 10 minutes later, you will be disappointed. If you think contextual search can eventually save you 1 person-hour, then I recommend looking at these extensions first:
1. ContextSearch-web-ext
2. Swift Selection Search (essentially abandoned in 2021)
3. Context Search Origin

If none of these work or satisfy you, then consider trying this one.

Going forward, there is one big advantage this extension has over all the above though: support for WebExtensions manifest version 3. Mozilla intends to keep supporting version 2 for the foreseeable future (with an advance notice of at least 1 year), but this will probably mean that in the short term, this extension will become cross-browser (available for Chromium), unlike the above.

Updates:
1. ContextSearch-web-ext now (1.48) supports WebExtensions manifest version 3!
2. The ITS’s owner made it public again.

Cette extension fait partie de mes indispensables, mais bloqué depuis cette semaine. J'ai installé la 6.1.1 mais ca n'a plus rien à voir avec ce que j'avais avant, j'aurai du garder une copie avant de changer.

i mean it works...but why can't I remove the "AI search" button at all??? Why do devs have to force AI into everything

When I right click on any page, There's an "AI Search" on the bottom of my main context menu. I cannot remove this via any option for the extension. This is even when I right-click on images. It has this extension's icon next to it and disabling the extension removes it so I know it's from this icon. I can only assume it was an oversight to force it enabled when most other things can be disabled in the options. I've been using the old version for as long as I can remember so I really like the extension but I don't want to even see any AI stuff so I hope I can remove this somehow.

Super useful addon. If you were using the old version and got a strange warning from Mozilla, backup your search engines and install this version.

Right click menu doesn't respond after updating.

8/24: I updated to 6.1.4 and restarted firefox. This problem still existed. The right click menu only works if I manually turn off then turn on the addon again in about:addons page.

Though, I did not find any setting ; can I remove the icon added in the search bar ? The « add search engine to context search » suggestion, at the far right of the explorer search bar.

This one is a mega useful addon, making a link to a search site of any fragment. Thank you, Olivier! You rule!

Excellent extension. Just what I needed. instead of having to use defualt search engine or opening a new tab to go to search site and search, I can now search stuff easily and quicker.

The only problem i have is with the new Firefox Sidebar, there is a point for this addon now, and a white Sidebar if you select it, no option to disable the Addon completly. Everything else is very useful an nice!

I'm so happy this addon is listed again! I tried many others but absolutely love this addon. I really appreciate the keybind option and use this feature constantly without needing any menu or overlay.

For some reason this add-on AMO listing changed but it is the same old good Context Search. Five stars well deserved for functionality which makes my daily browsing much easier.
