Turning it off is the only solution which of course requires that it be turned back on when you need it. I am a paid Proton user and in general like their products. I am hopeful that this problem will be promptly addressed and corrected.

- A few features are missing compared to Firefox's native password manager. The most relevant ones for me are a) keyboard shortcuts, and b) credential fields that are more than email-password pairs (e.g. AWS login that requires an Account ID, IAM Username, and Password)
