You'll need to change your default search engine via about:preferences if you want to search directly in AMO with the address bar

Addon search engines don't become your default engine, they become a one-off search engine. You access it by 1) clicking the AMO button in the searchbar or urlbar drop down, or 2) typing the search shortcut (alias) in the urlbar, like "@amo" for example.
