It is simply intentional on Google's part that they serve different versions of Search to different browsers, based on how much developer time they can devote to each one. Firefox developers are working with them to try to make the Chrome-specific version of the page work well with Firefox, though it is already at a point where an add-on like this is "good enough" for some users.
