For whatever reason- despite having it configured to be "On", I've had to manually turn it on, aka go into the UI and click on the domain name to check it, for it to work.

Sounds like a minor issue. But I'll often not realize that I'm in light mode on a site especially when I'm getting tired. I wont realize that my eyes are straining, and when I do, I think: Monitor brightness is low, so what could it be?
...Ohhh, right. Dark Reader isn't doing anything again. Sigh

Anyways, is it really true that this addon is responsible for memory leaks? extensions are sometimes hounded by baseless accusations of malware and stuff, but its happening more and more often that extensions actually are the culprit behind browser performance issues

Many sites require a different filter (dynamic, filter, filter+, static) when forced in dark mode to be readable. Why don't save the filter setting in addition to the dark mode option for each configured site?

Great but only three stars because it breaks the FireFox start screen. White text on a white background is not readable

Nifty extension that does what it says and used to be really useful, it helps reduce eyestrain by giving me a dark mode on websites that don't have it. I used to leave it on all the time. But lately (past 2 months or so) it's been slowing down firefox and I have to disable it for the page to load properly. Really hope the issue gets fixed soon - if yes, 5 stars!

by far the most polished dark mode addon, for most people this is the one you want to use. unfortunately for mobile users who prefer to browse x.com (formerly twitter) with adblock instead of through the android x app, this extension will slow your phone to a crawl after a few hours of browsing, forcing you to clear data and quit firefox. long story short: this is a great extension, but it's not updated regularly enough for anyone to consider donating, it's clearly abandonded. check out "Dark Background and Light Text" by Mikhail Khvoinitsky for an alternative darkmode extension on Firefox

With the latest Firefox update (version 150.0.2, May 7, 2026), this extension causes slow-down in the Reddit website, and only there. Screen updates lag or become unresponsive for long durations on the Reddit site. Firefox then shows a notification bar right below the address bar saying Dark Reader is causing the slowdown. Please fix if you can.

Well, I would give 5 stars, but it seems to have not been updated recently and is now tanking performance. I had to uninstall sadly.

A lot of people are either 1 or 5 star reviewers. I think one star is quite harsh.
I'm not impressed with this extension and was surprised it was a recommended one. I agree it isn't very intuitive to use but even worse it that it slows my browser down immediately to the point of being unusable. Google e-mail will not even open.
It would appear however this is a recent issue.

It's nice to be able to browse websites comfortably, but there's a problem.
When viewing photos and text on Google Maps, problems often occur.
I have to change or disable the filter to get it to display properly, and even when I switch to a different filter, the text sometimes doesn't display.
I think this program needs some improvement.

Dark Reader has recently been causing me problems on various websites. The pages get stuck while loading and links do not lead to the linked content, but to the content above or below it. The following websites only work for me if I disable Dark Reader. I use Firefox and Opera as my browsers.

Worth using, but it can be annoying.
Works 90% of the time but when it breaks it breaks hard. Wouldn't be as much of a problem if it the tools it provides you for custom changes were meaningful.

Worked almost fine for me... But somehow I prevented some Pages to load the Login windows (iframes?)
even whitelist the website did not help. That's why I had to remove this extenstion. Everything else worked fine, but the block me from using my mails made it unusable.

I installed it, hoping it would make the addons.mozilla.org site dark so I can read without having to squint at the screen that is too bright, but it won't put the site into a dark mode. Can this be fixed somehow?

Good but can be very buggy sometimes.

I have ads breaking through my ad blocker on Yahoo mail when I have this extension enabled. That's not really acceptable. I guess I'll only use this when my eyes are really tired.
