I used to use it, long ago, until I learned of this information. And once I realized I had been duped, uninstalled it. Never looked back since then and used better addons that ACTUALLY did the job.

To be fair, that article never had the facts correct. Plus it is 5 years old. Ghostery is now open source so you can see for yourself what's going on behind the scenes. https://github.com/ghostery/ghostery-extension

Ghostery has been an annoyance. I could control AdBlocker but not Ghostery. I want to remove it but have not yet found the way to do so.

Sorry to hear about your issues. You can always email us at support@ghostery.com so we can try and get it worked out. Otherwise.. Just go to Firefox Addons manager and click remove.

The blocker seems to be working well but I don't understand why it doesn't block trackers by default? Do I really need to block trackers manually on every website I visit?

Everyone's privacy preferences are different which is why the current version does not block by default. You don't need to set page by page. Click the Icon > Settings > Global Blocking and click "Block All"
