(I saw lots of recent reviews saying it works and I didn't want to mess up the rating so that's why I did four stars)
I've installed the extension and even restarted Firefox and I can't get it to work. I do have previous pages that I can return to by pressing the usual back button. Any thoughts on how to get it working? I've just migrated from Chrome to Firefox and am trying to find a substitute for the extension I had there.

Backspace Enabler has event listener to monitor click on backspace key. Occasionally on the first run due to browser configuration it doesn't run after installation immediately (computer restart should do the activation). Once it's active, it sets configuration properly for all future use.

I recently migrated from Chrome to Firefox and had been missing the ability to use backspace to back to the previous page. It occurred to me that there might be a Firefox extension and this one seems to work well for me. Now that I think about it, I probably had to install an extension for it to work in the latest incarnations of Chrome - it's just been so long that I added it that I didn't remember doing it.

This doesn't seem to work on all webpages anymore. Any chance of a fix for that?
Or maybe it randomly stops working...

Unfortunately, it's the websites who prevented execution of the function, backspace enabler is using Firefox built in engine and cannot possibly do evil. Some web developers due to the lack of knowledge just choose to block whatever they do not understand.

Edit: developer response puzzled me, so I searched and found that indeed the functionality this extension provides is still part of Firefox; it just needs to be enabled in about:config. Change "browser.backspace_action" value from 2 to 0 (zero). And it works! Without the icon in the URL bar or need for this extension. So I'm still puzzled by the developer's response.

Works well. Would it be possible to remove the indicator icon in the URL bar, or to make it optional? The icon appears regardless of whether there is history to go back to or not, so it is not really serving a purpose, and really the back arrow already serves the purpose of showing whether or not there is history to go back to, so the only purpose of the icon is to show whether or not the extension is enabled. Most people are going to keep it enabled all the time, so this is basically just visual clutter. Please consider this; thank you!

Works well in most cases, but it's unreliable in YouTube where I want to use it most (to return to the home page after watching a video). I find after opening a video, whether it is playing or not, and regardless of where I click on the page, mostly it doesn't go back. It does occasionally, which, as a commercial software engineer myself, I know is the most infuriating type of bug. So mentioning it here in the hope that it may be useful to the dev to be able to attempt to reproduce.

Unfortunately, it's not a bug, some websites, trying to keep users on their website even if you try to leave it.

The plugin is great and compact. For some reasons it doesn't work with GitHub (although history is present and works when pressing back icon)

This extension simply cannot fail to work in half of the pages, it's either works or doesn't work. Half of the pages means it's not being used properly. Most frequently conflicting software has been installed. Same as if it works 100% for one person how possibly it will work only in half of the cases for another person? My conclusion it's a defective user. It's about thousand people using this extension and less than five people experienced difficulties. I guess be proud.

Unfortunately this extension works only on half of pages visited. I can't tell you in which pages it works or it doesn't but surely it does not work in many pages, and that's why I give it only 2 stars. The creator should recheck it and correct it because it's a great help for experienced users that work more with keyboard and less with mouse.

Have you modified the config file for Firefox? Do you have other remapping add-ons installed? Because they will interfere. Back button only works if there is a history to go back to (like back arrow) and it works every time. Some webpages block the history, nothing can be done about that. Since you are the first one who complained I assume these are the type of webpages you're visiting. Consider that, 400 people do not have any issues.

You mean you modified your Firefox config and expected this extension to work? You are the first one of 441 people with working extension, who had done something so dumb and then gave negative review. This extension only works on unmodified Firefox once you altered config it will not work. It does not work on cats, bicycles or pizza either, is it the fault of the cats or the human who was trying to do that?

Well, there was a big discussion to that, and the main reason Firefox developers decided not to have this option was because "other browsers removed that functionality as unnecessary already". That's how I see it.

It's different code, not simple addition. Why won't you use default Firefox shortcuts? "Command+Right Arrow", that sends active browser window page forward.

just installed, tried backspace on a site with no text boxes and previous pages...did not work so i'm removing...went to a different page and it suddenly worked re-rated 5 stars!

I installed it and immediately was able to use the backspace key to go back a page. Works great!
