Ibid — from Latin "ibidem," meaning "in the same place" — is a citation manager built for students, researchers, and academics who need accurate references without compromising their privacy.

Ibid runs a full Citation Style Language (CSL) engine directly in your browser using WebAssembly. All citation processing happens locally on your device. No data is sent to external servers. No account is required.

HOW IT WORKS
  1. Visit any webpage, journal article, or book page
  2. Click the Ibid icon — metadata is extracted automatically
  3. Choose your citation style and copy the formatted reference

Ibid supports one-click citing from academic publishers, news sites, and general webpages.

CITATION STYLES

74 styles bundled offline, including APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, and IEEE. 2,600+ additional styles from the official CSL repository can be downloaded on demand. Once downloaded, they work offline.

  • Full privacy policy: https://ibid.tools/privacy

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Ibid uses a Rust/WebAssembly citation engine powered by Hayagriva (the CSL processor from the Typst project) for accurate rendering of all 2,600+ official CSL styles. An embedded English locale ensures correct terms ("et al.," month names, ordinals). The WASM engine also handles BibTeX and RIS parsing for fast import and export.

FIREFOX-SPECIFIC NOTES
  • Uses Manifest V3 with background scripts (not service workers)
  • Library panel uses Firefox's sidebar_action API (equivalent to Chrome's sidePanel)
  • Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+S opens the sidebar
  • Optional permissions for scholarly APIs (arxiv.org, doi.org, etc.) are listed in optional_permissions — Firefox prompts the user when these are first requested
  • Minimum Firefox version: 109 (MV3 support)
  • Addon ID: ibid@ibid.tools
