Privacy Policy for Save to Are.na Extension

This Privacy Policy describes how the "Save to Are.na" browser extension ("the Extension") handles your information.

Information We Collect and Use

The Extension needs to access certain information to function correctly:

1. Are.na Account Authentication: To save content to your Are.na account, the Extension uses OAuth 2.0 to authenticate you directly with Are.na. We securely store the authentication token provided by Are.na within your browser's local storage (localStorage or chrome.storage). This token is used solely to make authenticated requests to the Are.na API on your behalf. We do not have access to your Are.na password.
2. Image URLs and Page Context: When you click the save icon on an image, the Extension accesses the URL of that image and potentially the URL of the page you are on (window.location.href). This information is sent to the Are.na API only when you explicitly choose to save the image to a board.
3. Are.na Board Information: The Extension fetches a list of your Are.na boards (names and IDs) using the Are.na API to allow you to select a destination for saving. It also stores the IDs of your most recently used boards in your browser's local storage to display them quickly in the board selector UI.
4. Website Content Access: The Extension requires permission to access the content of webpages you visit (activeTab and potentially <all_urls> depending on the manifest) solely to identify images and inject the save button overlay UI. It does not collect or store the general content of the pages you browse.

How Information is Stored

• Authentication Token: Stored securely in your browser's local storage, managed by the browser's WebExtension Storage API.
• Recent Board IDs: Stored in your browser's local storage.
• Other Data: Image URLs and page context are processed in memory and only sent to Are.na upon your action; they are not stored locally by the extension long-term.

Data Sharing

We do not share your information with any third parties, except for the data necessarily transmitted to Are.na's API to perform the core functions of the Extension (authentication, fetching boards, saving images). We do not collect analytics or transmit data to any servers other than Are.na's official API endpoints (api.are.na).

Data Security

We use standard browser mechanisms (WebExtension Storage API) for storing sensitive data like authentication tokens locally on your device.

Managing Your Data

• You can revoke the Extension's access to your Are.na account at any time through your Are.na account settings (https://are.na/settings/applications).
• You can clear the locally stored authentication token and recent board list by clearing your browser's storage for the extension or by uninstalling the Extension.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy within the extension listing or repository.
