CiteWell Browser Extension Privacy Policy

This privacy policy explains how the CiteWell browser extension collects, uses, stores, and transmits information.

Information We Collect

When you use the CiteWell extension, we may process:

3. Login credentials used to authenticate with CiteWell

6. Basic account profile information returned by CiteWell, such as user ID, name, verification status, and plan type
7. Paper and reference information
   When you click the extension on an academic article page, the extension may extract paper metadata from the active tab, including:

11. Journal
12. Year
13. Volume
14. Issue
15. Pages
16. DOI
17. PMID
18. Source URL
19. Source website
20. Site report information
    If you submit a site report, we may receive:

22. Selected report/error type
23. Local extension storage
    The extension stores some information in the browser to keep you signed in and make the extension work, including:

28. Selected folder or extension state

How We Use Information

We use this information only to:
- Authenticate your CiteWell account
- Keep your session active
- Extract academic paper metadata from pages you choose to use with the extension
- Save references to your CiteWell library
- Load your CiteWell folders
- Submit unsupported-site or parsing-error reports
- Maintain, secure, debug, and improve CiteWell services

Active Tab Use

The extension reads page content only from the active tab after you click or use the CiteWell extension. It does not continuously monitor your browsing.

Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use extension data for advertising or personalized ads. We do not share extension data with third-party data brokers.

We may share information only with service providers needed to operate CiteWell, or when required for legal, security, fraud-prevention, or compliance purposes.

Security

The extension communicates with CiteWell over HTTPS. Session and authentication data are stored in browser extension storage and session storage where available.

Data Retention and Deletion

Saved references and account data are retained according to your CiteWell account settings and CiteWell service retention practices. You may delete saved references through your CiteWell account. To request account or data deletion, contact us.
