Support for this is partially already there. In the "Edit dial" window there is a "Choose custom thumbnail..." button, if you click it, you can select file from disk but also paste a URL in there. This will download the picture and use it as thumbnail.
However It will be improved in upcoming weeks and you will be able to use custom URL thumbnails in a better more intuitive way :)
