Privacy Policy
Version: 2026-05
Effective date: May 8, 2026
Focus Companion is a browser extension designed to help users improve productivity by tracking time spent on websites and providing insights about browsing habits.
This Privacy Policy explains how Focus Companion collects, uses, and protects user information.
1. Free Version Without Signup (Local Processing)
If you use Focus Companion without creating an account, tracking and analysis run locally in your browser.
The extension may locally store:
- Website domains visited
- Page-level URLs used for local categorization and history views
- Time spent on websites
- User-defined distraction lists
- Productivity statistics
This information is stored using the browser's local storage and:
- is not transmitted to Focus Companion servers
- is not sold and is not shared with third parties for advertising or profiling by Focus Companion
Some browser-managed or infrastructure-level requests (for example extension update checks, browser security services, or content delivery/network routing) may occur as part of normal operation. These requests are not used by Focus Companion to collect browsing history for the free no-signup experience.
To display site icons in dashboard views, the extension may request favicon resources from a third-party favicon service (currently Google S2) using website domain names. This icon lookup is separate from Focus Companion tracking storage and does not upload your local browsing analytics dataset to Focus Companion servers.
2. Free Version With Signup (No Plus)
If you create an account but do not subscribe to Plus, Focus Companion processes account and product-access data on Focus Companion servers.
Account data may include email address, authentication metadata, plan state, and accepted policy versions.
Browsing activity used for tracking (visited domains, time on sites, distraction lists, and productivity metrics) remains local and is not uploaded for analytics in this tier.
Favicon requests used for UI icon rendering may still call external favicon infrastructure with domain information, but this does not change the no-upload rule for local tracking data in the free non-Plus tier.
3. Plus Subscription (AI Insights)
Users who subscribe to Focus Companion Plus may enable AI-powered productivity insights.
To generate these insights, authenticated browsing activity data may be sent to Focus Companion servers as part of the user's secured Plus session.
This data may include:
- Website domains visited
- Time spent on websites
- Aggregated browsing statistics
This data is used only to generate productivity insights. When sent to third-party AI processing services, it is de-identified, not tied to an individual user, and not stored.
The browsing activity data sent for AI analysis:
- is not permanently stored in the Focus Companion database
- is processed temporarily to generate insights
- is not used to identify individual users
4. Account Information
If a user creates an account, Focus Companion may store:
- Email address
- Authentication credentials (stored securely)
- Subscription status
This information is used solely for:
- User authentication
- Managing subscriptions
- Providing access to premium features
Passwords are never stored in plain text and are securely encrypted using industry-standard security practices.
5. Feedback, Support, and Beta Access Requests
If users contact Focus Companion support, submit feedback, or request beta access, Focus Companion may collect and store:
- Email address
- Name (if provided)
- Feedback category/type (for example: general, bug, feature, improvement)
- Feedback or support message content
- Beta request motivation text (if provided)
- Beta access preference/interest flags (for example interest in Plus)
- Beta request workflow status and review timestamps (for example pending, approved, rejected; created/updated/reviewed timestamps)
- Email ownership verification records used for secure submission flows (for example purpose, one-time code, expiration, usage status, created timestamp)
This information is used only to:
- Verify email ownership for submission and access-request security
- Respond to user inquiries and support requests
- Process and review beta access requests
- Send operational messages related to submitted requests (for example verification or confirmation emails)
- Improve the service based on user feedback
6. Data Sharing
Focus Companion does not sell, rent, or trade personal information.
Data may be processed by trusted third-party services strictly necessary to operate the service, such as:
- Cloud infrastructure providers
- AI processing services used to generate productivity insights
- Payment processing providers for subscription management
- Operational services needed for security, abuse prevention, and reliable delivery
These services process data only as required to provide their functionality.
If a third-party request occurs due to product dependencies or operational safeguards, we limit data sent to the minimum needed for that request and do not intentionally include full browsing-history payloads for free users without Plus.
For feedback and beta-access workflows, data may be sent to trusted operational providers only as needed to deliver verification and transactional emails and operate request processing securely.
7. Data Security
Focus Companion takes reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect user information against unauthorized access, disclosure, or loss.
8. User Control
Users may:
- Disable tracking at any time
- Remove the extension from their browser
- Cancel their subscription
- Request deletion of their account
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any updates will be reflected by the updated date at the top of this document.
