Although your API Key cannot be used to create or accept trade offers, scammers can use your API Key and social engineering to mimic otherwise legitimate trade offers.

The most common scenario is the following.

a) User is sent a trade offer for their item(s) by a bot operated by a trusted third party website.
b) Scammer intercepts trade offer sent by the bot and cancels it immediately.
c) Scammer changes their profile to match that of the bot and sends an identical trade offer.
d) User accepts the trade offer, unknowingly losing their item to the scammer.

To mitigate these types of attacks, we track more than 10,000 bots operated by most major third party marketplaces. The following websites are supported.

If you are trading with any of the websites above, and you do not see a banner verifying the legitimacy of the bot in the trade offer page, DO NOT continue with the trade.
Double-check their profile, steam level, and steam ID to see if they really are who they say they are. Note as good practice we encourage you to always double-check the trade offer yourself - even if the bot is verified by us. Keep your items safe!
