Several years ago, I installed this AdBlock Plus, and since then I've mostly just forgotten about it. It occasionally updates, and does a fairly good job just keeping my browsing experience pleasant.

In my experience - and that of some 9.5 million users -, this is one of the most effective extensions for blocking ads.
