Hawk Translate is a fast, distraction-free translation and language-learning companion. Select any text on any website to get an instant translation, natural-voice pronunciation, and for single words, grammar and synonyms to grow your vocabulary. Watch YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video with two subtitle languages at once. Save the words you want to keep and learn them with built-in flash cards.

What you can do
Watch YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video with bilingual subtitles. A new button in the player shows two subtitle lines at once — the video's language on top, yours below. On YouTube, both lines come from YouTube's own captions (including YouTube's auto-translations) and stay in sync line for line. On Netflix and Prime Video, pair two of the title's own subtitle languages (perfect timing, nothing leaves the page), machine-translate the original track into your language with the provider of your choice, or load your own subtitle file (.srt, .vtt, .ttml) for titles that only ship one language. Machine-translated lines appear progressively and are cached per title, so re-watching never re-translates. On ad-supported Prime streams, subtitles stay in sync across ad breaks. Lines can be resized on the spot, and your language pair is remembered and applies automatically on the next video. Pause and select any subtitle word to translate or ☆-save it, subtitles become study material.
Select and translate. Highlight text; a compact bubble shows the translation right next to your selection.
Listen. Click the speaker 🔊 to hear the original or the translation in a natural voice. Click the same text twice for a slower replay — great for pronunciation practice.
Learn vocabulary. Select a single word and Hawk shows its part of speech (noun / verb / adjective …) and synonyms, so you see the whole word family at a glance.
Save words and review them as flash cards. Tap the ☆ on any translation to add it to your study list. Review your words on a spaced-repetition schedule: words you know come back less and less often, words you miss come right back, and words you've mastered graduate out of the rotation. Export your list to Anki, CSV, or JSON anytime.
Keep a local history. Every translation is saved on your device — searchable, filterable by site and date, and exportable. You decide how long it's kept, or turn it off entirely.
Full-text popup. Click the toolbar icon to type or paste anything, pick your target language, and translate.
Right-click menu. Translate any selection from the context menu — no long mouse trips.
Keyboard shortcut. Assign a hotkey to translate the current selection instantly, even on pages where you've turned the bubble off.
Translate PDFs. Opt in to open web PDFs in the bundled viewer, so select-to-translate works on PDF pages just like regular web pages.

Multiple translation backends — no key required
Hawk Translate works out of the box with no setup. Pick your preferred service in the options:

Google — free, default, fast, high quality
MyMemory — free, no key, ~5,000 words per day
DeepL — your own key (free or paid plan)
Microsoft Azure Translator — your own free key (2M characters/month)
LibreTranslate — open source; point it at your own endpoint
If the chosen backend fails, a built-in "Try with …" chooser retries instantly with another provider — no detour through the settings.

Built for language learners
Bilingual subtitles on YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video turn any captioned video into listening practice: hear the original, read both languages, and save the words you don't know without leaving the player.
A speaker on both the original and the translation lets you hear the source language while you read the meaning.
The word-families panel shows nuance: seeing synonyms grouped by part of speech builds vocabulary faster than a bare translation.
Flash-card review turns the words you actually encountered while browsing into long-term vocabulary — no separate app, no account.

Your settings
Theme: Auto / Light / Dark for the popup and the bubble.
Bubble style: Classic (compact) or Card (original and translation, each with its own speaker).
Auto-close: the bubble dismisses itself after a few seconds — hover to pause. Configurable from 0 (off) to 120 seconds.
When the bubble appears: a small hawk icon to click, instantly on selection, or only via popup / right-click.
Per-site control: disable the bubble on sites where you don't want it, straight from the right-click menu.

50+ translation languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese, Thai, Turkish, Indonesian, Ukrainian, Polish, Dutch, and more. Extension metadata localized in 20 languages.

Privacy
Hawk Translate does not collect or transmit any personal data to the developer. The text you translate is sent only to the provider you choose (Google, MyMemory, DeepL, Azure, or LibreTranslate). Bilingual subtitles read the captions YouTube, Netflix, or Prime Video already serves for the video you're watching; when both lines come from the video's own subtitle tracks, no translation provider is involved and that data never leaves your browser. If you choose the machine-translate option on Netflix or Prime Video, the subtitle text is sent to the translation provider you picked — just like any other translation — and the result is cached only on your device. Your translation history, saved words, and flash-card progress are stored only on your device — never uploaded, never synced, and removed if you uninstall. API keys you enter for DeepL, Azure, or LibreTranslate are stored locally in your browser and never sent anywhere except that provider's own servers for requests you trigger.
