I can't get https://www.google.com/ncr or https://www.google.com to work as the saved new tab page.
Other search engines work just fine like startpage.com etc, having the most popular search engine (google,com), in my eyes, should be a priority.
Any ideas?

Unfortunately this is not something that can be fixed.
The way this addon avoids changing the address bar content is by creating an iframe and displaying your chosen site in that iframe. The problem is that sites (like Google) can set an HTTP header that blocks other sites (like this addon) from displaying their pages inside an iframe.
If you look in the addon options page, next to where you choose the URL, it does warn you about this by saying "The site must allow iframe embedding or it won't work".

However, in your case, I don't really understand the use case for having google.com as your new tab page if you can just search straight from the address bar? Maybe Firefox address bar "smart keywords" would work better so you could just type something like "img my icon" in the address bar and be taken straight to the Google image search results for "my icon".     It fully achieves the goal of changing the new tab page and properly clearing the address bar. It is the best extension for faithfully fulfilling this purpose.

    This extension allowed me to switch from Chrome to Firefox since I've been using a Start.me page for a very long time and I needed the address bar to be empty when a new tab is opened.
    Custom New Tab Page does the job flawlessly. An iframe is no problem for me since all links are opened in new tabs. Or you can just middle click them, you know.

    Does exactly what I want it to do, I use this to make a "spacer" tab with my vertical tabs (since I have so many...), and I can set the title of the new tab to be a nice, visual "—————" instead of "about:newtab", which makes browsing through my long list of tabs much easier! Plus, the author's website at zen.mint.as looks super professional and works extremely well as a new tab page!

    Thanks this works. if someone is seeing an error about X-Frame, dont forget to go to the extension settings and enable "Remove Iframe header" option

    Okay for the feature, but changing the theme hard crashes the browser. Just cut the functionality, it's not needed but killing off potential work is just a disaster of an extension.

    To protect your security, ..... doesn't allow Firefox to show the page if another website has embedded it. To view this page, you must open it in a new window.

    Does exactly what I want, awesome! No URL that's prefilled, I can just start typing and still have my selfhosted dashboard when opening a New Tab 🫰

    Most other new tab overrides just redirect to the url. But this extension uses an iframe I think. Another plus is when loading the new tab page you can set it to be dark mode or light mode, so no more flashes of white when loading a page that is dark.     It works as it should and is great.

    However, I'm so annoyed at Mozilla for making an addon to be necessary!!

    It's so dumb that they don't let you change the NewTab url like they let you change your new window start page.

    There is really NO reason for Mozilla NOT to off the ability to do so.

    Well, I'm betting that it has to do with $$$ honestly. The default new tab page is all about Pocket and most of the default articles it gives you are to paid sites that Pocket (aka Mozilla) make money from.... soooooo, that is the ONLY reason why I can see them not offering.

    Because lets face it, we open new tabs A LOT more then we do new windows.
