Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 19, 2023
ExactNote, Inc. ("us", "we", or "our") provides browser extensions for use and operates the https://www.exactnote.com website (collectively the "Service").
This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use and disclosure of Personal Information when you use our Service.
We will not use or share your information with anyone except as described in this Privacy Policy.
We use your Personal Information for providing and improving the Service. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. Unless otherwise defined in this Privacy Policy, terms used in this Privacy Policy have the same meanings as in our Terms and Conditions, accessible at https://www.exactnote.com/policy/terms-and-conditions.html.
Information Collection And Use
While using our Service, we may ask you to provide us with certain personally identifiable information that can be used to contact or identify you. Personally identifiable information may include, but is not limited to, your email address, username, password, and other information ("Personal Information").
We collect this information for the purpose of providing the Service, identifying and communicating with you, responding to your requests/inquiries, and improving our services.
The Service is comprised of three components including a website, browser extensions, and mobile apps. The privacy policy for each component is described herein.
The website operates in two modes. These modes are site logged out ("Site Logged Out") and site logged in ("Site Logged In"). In both modes, information may be collected from our browser extension or mobile apps if they are installed in accordance with their privacy policies described herein. In addition to information collected from our browser extension and mobile apps, the site collects data through your interaction with the site. In the Site Logged Out state, data is not associated with your user account. In the Site Logged In state, data is associated with your user account. ExactNote uses Rackspace Cloud Files to store and deliver screen shots created while creating annotations. ExactNote uses Pusher to handle WebSocket message updates. And, ExactNote uses MailChimp to send transactional emails. No other data is shared with third parties. ExactNote uses data collected primarily to provide and improve our service. Any information used for advertising is made anonymous to standards established by the term PII (Personally Identifiable Information) as used in NIST Special Publication 800-122 and personal data in EU (European Union) GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) regulations. Once anonymous data is created, it may be used to serve ads based solely on the content viewed by a user. No personal data, which has not been made anonymous, is used for advertising purposes.
The browser extension operates in three modes. These modes are disabled ("Disabled"), anonymous enabled ("Enabled"), and enabled while logged in ("Logged In"). When the browser extension is Disabled, no information is collected via our browser extension. In the Enabled state, only the webpage URL and IP address is collected. Webpage URL is collected for the purpose of transmitting accessible annotations belonging to the webpage URL. IP address is typically transmitted when packets are sent via the Internet. These IP addresses are logged for security analysis. The webpage URL may be shared with the ExactNote website to improve the quality of service on the ExactNote website. In the Logged In state, information is collected and associated with a user account. This information is used to create and store information when annotations are created. Furthermore, this information is used for managing access controls associated with non-public, shareable annotations created by other users. In addition, other data is collected and used to provide the functionality and services made possible by the Service.
The ExactNote mobile apps operate in the same modes as our browser extension and collect the same information in these three modes.
Log Data
We may also collect information that your browser and extension send whenever you use our Service ("Log Data"). This Log Data may include information such as your computer's Internet Protocol ("IP") address, browser type, browser version, annotations created using our extension, replies to other user's annotations and remarks, the pages of our website that you visit, the time and date of your visit, the time spent on those pages and other statistics, and requests for annotations on websites that you visit. Since this data can be sensitive, we do not share this data with third parties, and we do not advertise based on this data. Furthermore, this data is made anonymous whenever possible, and we use modern cryptographic methods to ensure this data is secure in transit.
We may collect, monitor, and analyze this type of information in order to improve our Service's functionality, fix defects, and enhance the security of the Service.
