- Rated 1 out of 5by Jan, 5 years agoI wanted to try Qwant as a search engine, but it takes over Firefox's start page. Configuring the start page is no longer possible while the extension is active.

posted 5 years agoHello, we're sorry that this addon does not suit you but brace yourself, another addon is coming!
And even better, there it is : https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/qwant-com/
This second addon, also handcrafted by our developers does not change your homepage and only sets Qwant as your default search engine. - Rated 1 out of 5by Jozef, 5 years agoRight after installing it changes my homepage setting in Firefox - withou any question and without ability to revert. The only way to restore homepage was to dissable the extension... Thi "feature" makes the whole extension useless.

- Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 15305298, 5 years agoThe first impression was promising but after installing the addon Qwant gave itself the permission to change my startpage without my consent and there is no way to disable this. That's unacceptable and quite fishy for a search engine that 'respects' my privacy. Going back to DuckDuckGo.

When I go to Settings > Home, I'm not able to input my previous or new homepage url - they're all greyed out with a message underneath:
"An extension, Qwant, is controlling your home page."
The only way to restore your homepage or change it appears to be by disabling or uninstalling this extension!!!
I've sent an abuse report to Mozilla about this addon. Uninstalling this right now and sticking to DuckDuckGo.Developer response

The fact that you cannot revert your homepage is truly an issue and we've already asked Mozilla if the override of the homepage could be consensual, but as of today, if an extension wants to set the user's homepage, there is no other way than what we did, this is why we do provide another addon. - Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 15073028, 6 years agoOn installing Qwant, it made itself my main search engine - without my consent!
I used this search engine for a few minutes, but found that I could only choose 'english for the interface display, and not the actual searches that came back!
Why is that not an option?! ... french, dutch and german were choices, but not english.
After that experience, I uninstalled the Qwant extension, it prompted me to submit a reason why I was uninstalling. I was told that my few lines of explaination was 'too long' (max is 255 characters) ...ok fine, so I gave up, totally ridiculous!
Once uninstalled, I noticed that my startup homepage and tabs had been deleted! ... I had 5 tabs that open on firefox start-up, after uninstalling Qwant they had been deleted.
What a pathetic attempt, get a grip Qwant .. do you even think about your users?
- these are important and annoying inconveniences, and they are not even being addressed.Developer response
posted 5 years agoHello, we're sorry that this addon does not suit you but the search engine feature is advised on the description.
As for the search language, we're sorry that the settings were not obvious too. Qwant does handle over 20 different languages, and of course english is one of them.

Ask people in Hong Kong. Control sucks. Its a no brainer. Use Duck Duck Go,it respects your browser

Pas envie de continuer à essuyer les plâtres - Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 14202038, 7 years agoForcing your startpage on me is a no-go! While I like qwant, I had to deinstall it.

posted 7 years agoHi! Thank you for your feedback, if you do not want Qwant to be your startpage, we recommand you to try our Basic Extension that define Qwant only as your default search engine! Here is the link: https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/qwant-com/ - Rated 1 out of 5by mardiros, 7 years agoForcing the startup page behavior and having a new search engine are two different things.
Please stop forcing the default tab with your extension.
The ads with LCL on startup is ruining your reputation. - Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 14153140, 7 years agoSadly this forces to use qwant as a startpage without an option to disable it.
I'd love to just use the search engine and keep my default startpage. - Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 14152321, 7 years agoAdd-on is unusabel - it forces to use qwant as startpage. I only wanted qwant for firefox search.
Qwant itself as searchengine is very good! - Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 14147478, 7 years agoThe addon changes the start page of Firefox to Qwant. This is unnecessary if you only want to use the search engine, but cannot be disabled.
- Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 14142449, 7 years agoQwant only gets one star because it changes my home page to qwant. Why? If I can not keep my home page, qwant is not an option.
Somebody else explained how to add quant without installing the extension. 5 stars for that person. Like that person, my rating is for the extension, not the search engine. - Rated 1 out of 5by ANDRE, 7 years ago

- Rated 1 out of 5by mecki78, 7 years agoMore than 560 KB for a search plugin is a joke. This adds a lot of unnecessary functionality: A toolbar icon (who needs that?), context menu entries (anyone using that?), access to the tracking protection setting that you can also change in the normal prefs... and even with all of that, I don't see why it needs far over 500 KB, it should need less than 50 KB.
Here's how you get the same functionality as OpenSearch plugin w/o that stupid extension:
Make sure no Qwant extension is installed, customize your toolbar, make sure the search field is visible, open Qwant search in your browser, the search bar shows a little green + button on the magnifying glass, click it, it offers you to add Qwant as a search engine, select that, and you are done (all it installs is a 10 KB XML file!!!). Now you can remove the search field from your toolbar again if you don't like to have one.
PS: This is no rating of the search engine Qwant, this is just a rating for this extension! I like the search engine but I dislike a bloated extension for something as simple as a custom search.
