Startpage Privacy Protection by Startpage

by Nyaa, 3 years agoThere are people rating this extension low strictly on the basis that they think you should only use uBlock Origin as an extension. Ignore these reviews, this is a great extension that adds to privacy. This extension does more than what uBlock Origin does, uBlock Origin also has features that this extension does not provide. This is not a uBlock Origin clone, it is it's own extension. It is not meant to replace these extensions and the developers actively encourage you to use it alongside it.
This extension sends the do not track and the GPC signal. This is something that uBlock Origin does not do. It also ranks websites privacy giving it a score from 1-5, also a unique feature.
Stop trying to gatekeep privacy please and encourage adoption of new extensions and privacy tools. Locking ourselves to one single tool, even though it helps against browser fingerprinting, is a recipe for disaster. The problem is *not* the tools, it's the lack of good privacy laws. Extensions that increase privacy are a symptom of bad privacy laws, we shouldn't *have* to use any tool in the first place to have privacy.

- Rated 4 out of 5by Briadd-on, 9 months agoSeems to work as intended, haven't had any issues with it. I've been using it since November 2022 on Firefox and before then on Chromium.

posted 9 months agoThanks for giving our extension a try! We recently released an Anonymous View update that should allow those sites to function correctly. Feel free to reach out to us at support@startpage.com if you are still running into the same issue. - Rated 5 out of 5by Lemi1, a year ago

Ellers findes der up-to-date alternativer.Developer response

This extension is useless. Use uBlock Origin instead.
Like, what are the reasons to use this extension? What's so special about it?
Senseless and useless, documentation-less and introduction-less, privacy-less.
Startpage does one thing, named privacy-washing.
Yes, I do care about my privacy and that's the reason I don't use this product or anything from red-flagged System1!
Red flags! Red flags! Red flags!
Be aware.
For team:
Please explain what's so special about this extension and is it better then uBlock Origin?
Thank you.
P.S. Also, explain why do you privacy-wash people.Developer response
posted a year agoThis extension blocks trackers and cookies, which is pretty useful these days. It is not adblocker and does not have all the same features as uBlock. If someone would like all those features, they can use that instead.

Lastly, yes System1 owns Startpage, but our commitment to privacy and more importantly our privacy policy have not changed.

This addon is awesome for privacy matters (especially the search engine because it applies google results), but on some (important) pages, it blocks security content.
I would like to report a problem with your addon "Startpage Privacy Protection" with Firefox browser (Windows 11).
When creating a Microsoft account and the user is told to solve the robot puzzle, "Startpage Privacy Protection" blocks the entire puzzle. The reasons for this behaviour may be justified (due to privacy harms from Microsoft), but its impossible to create an account while having your addon enabled.Developer response
posted a year agoThanks for trying our extension and for taking the time to leave a review. We'll share with our Product team. For now, consider using the extension settings either to be less restrictive or to temporarily allow-list Microsoft.

Thanks for caring about privacy. - Rated 5 out of 5by Thorsten B., a year ago
- Rated 5 out of 5by RiemannZeta, a year agoI've used all of the privacy search products for many months, some many years - looking into how they work, trying different settings configurations, keeping track of trends in results like accuracy, bias, and the similarity to results and adds offered by the major players. Adding Startpage is one of the first things I do when setting up a device/browser. Less bias, more unique results, less obnoxious ad tactics, and less creepy data fed to my digital twin. The only con is fewer results at times. Bears little weight when you compare the quality to the longer list made of endless repetative garbage.

- Rated 3 out of 5by kula, 2 years agoadd-on would be great if the more annoying then helfup "Escape Route feature" could be disabled.
blurring a site when pressing "esc" 3x but not reloading the site properly after that; closing tab when pressing "esc" 4x - that is not really what I need or expect from a privacy-/search engine-add-on.Developer response

- Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 15179677, 2 years agoVery cool looking page without hoopla with all the things I hate about Google taken out. I can't stand advertising because it has become the focus of everything, everywhere. Being able to search without it is similar to reading a book in a quiet place with no distractions. I would call it "comfortable". My laptop does not lag from everyone attempting to put things into my computer. My processor is calm. So am I. No blitzkrieg of unwanted ads. Finally a search engine that is up to date, quick, simple, and easy on the eyes. I hope it stays this way. Don't sell out to an alphabet agency. I will spread the word about this search engine as long as it considers my privacy. Thanks bunches.
