I wish it was still updated but as you can see on github it's been radio silence in 8 years unfortunately, I prefer this to other extensions but it's worth considering an alternative now that this has been left behind. The biggest issue is I'm used to iOS emojis and have a much easier time looking for them, I don't see anyone else offering a valuable alternative.

I've been using this Add-on for a while now (years). But I might be changing to another one that is updated and has more features such as having the ability (distinctive physical traits) of one's race.

It also really needs to be updated with the newest Emoji's as it hasn't been done in a while now. The other Add-on just title 'Emoji' is listed as 'Recommended' also and is updated and has the features I mentioned missing from this Add-on (Emoji Cheatsheet) Hope its creator (Johann Hofmann) reads this and updates it.

at least let me select multiple emojis at once

Works great, but lots of latest emojis are missing like "Party Face" (released in UniCode Emoji 11.0 in 2018 !)
That's why I remove 2 stars 😕

little suggestion for a future update
the translation of emoticons (in the tooltip) in the language of your choice
because I am null in English, and I do not use the emoticons because of the English expression that I do not know

eg a small TXT translation file or the content indicates
GRINNING = Rire
SMILE = Sourire
SMILEY = Rire au éclat
...

It's OK, but didn't find some of the emoji files I downloaded previous to installing it. I'm not much of an emoji user, so I downloaded it but turn it off on occasion.

Would be nice to use more recent emoji set, like emoji one.
