China began a crackdown on VPNs in April 2026, severely restricting Proton VPN and Privado VPN. Incredibly They rely too much on OpenVPN / WireGuard . This is easily identified and blocked by Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), AdGuard VPN was able to connect quickly under these circumstances. I suspect this is due to its unique encryption protocol, which is different from other VPNs. This is quite surprising, allowing you to maintain your connection even under strict internet censorship.

Completely cripples Firefox when behind a VPN. Many websites will not load and either hang at "TLS handshake" or claim the connection is not secure. One of the worst options available. Their support is abysmal and it wasn't until I mentioned in the issues Github that I would be escalating my concerns to my state's Attorney General for fraud did they do their jobs and look at a ticket that was sitting there for 20 days. Look elsewhere.
