The app is great, but looking more carefully at the permissions, I'm only using it very selectively, ie, only activating it when needed. The kind of access signed away lets it vacuum up far too much data. It's free, and this defrays the cost, but the type of data is so totally unrelated to it's task.

Hi! Thank you for your review. Which permissions are unnecessary?

Unfortunately, in order for Rikaichamp to be able to present pop-ups on the page it requires access to that page's contents. Web extensions do not provide any more fine-grained permissions that that. As far as I can tell, it's impossible to create a pop-up dictionary with fewer permissions.

The source code is available for audit and/or forking if you are concerned about misuse of those permissions.

    Great extension. Could you please add a way to copy hiragana/katakana that shows the romaji as well? It would be really helpful for people who are starting with japanese. Quite often I have to copy the expression into google translate to see the romaji.

    I'm afraid I couldn't quite follow your suggestions, however. If you enable romaji display in the settings and look at a work like テスト you should see "tesuto" in the popup and also when you copy the entry.

    (Note that the extension will not work on addons.mozilla.org because Firefox blocks extensions from working there.)

    Seems promising, but there's no Japanese monolingual dictionary — avoid this extension if you want to actually learn the language.

    This dictionary is doing all that I could dream of. Instant recognition via mouseover, the dictionary is complete, erudite but also very simple to access if you just want a straightforward translation.
    Once you look up the word, you can find the kanji decomposition. It's detailed and easy at the same time. Please try.
