The fact that it has no ratings and very few downloads tells me it's either test software, a passion project, or something the developer stepped away from (the version literally says "resigned" in it) .

You're right that it's a necessary distraction — it keeps you informed without you having to actively go hunt for news. And at 16 users, you're basically an early adopter (or beta tester) 👍
