Background: I'm a "use multiple instances of Firefox distributed over my many virtual desktops, each one with quite a few tabs, e.g. 10 to 20". Without this tool I get memory readings easily well above 10's of GB - which is kind of "problematic" :-)
Clicking on a discarded tab later on, more or less, instantly recovers it (as long as the date inside Firefox's cache was still valid - as far as I understand it) - which is perfectly fine! I prefer waiting "a second" compared to - Firefox is eating up my RAM.
What I wonder most is, why Firefox itself hasn't inbuilt this feature now (mid of 2025)...
PS: Ever wondered what Firefox is doing right now / which tab uses what amount of memory?
Check out Firefox's "about:performance" and "about:unloads" pages. The first one shows you how much memory/cpu your tabs (and a few other things) are currently using. And about:unloads gives you a list of all active tabs (so already discarded ones don't show up there) - and especially: When did you last view them and how much RAM do they use.
about:performance updates automatically, about:unload, you have to reload it manually to get an updated view...
PPS. If you are going to check if the add-on works correctly, give it enough time. E.g. if you have the initial discard timer set to 3 minutes and the last accessed time would be 9:00:03, then the tab will not be discarded at 9:03:03. The add-on runs only every full minute (as I've understood it), so at 9:04:00 the Add-on checks, that the page hasn't be used for more than 3 minutes and discards it... - Xếp hạng 5 trong số 5bởi Dr. Trustmeonthisone, 2 năm trướcLiterally perfect, way back tried some other equivalent (probably "Auto Tab Discard" or that's at least close) and always had weird issues, as if discarded tabs were still causing massive slowdown and eventually crashes. Same with the identical functionality included in SideBery.
Haven't had any problems with this one yet. I was able to keep browsing comfortably with 3000 tabs without quitting FF for about 20 hours. Using the alternatives would have made the browser choke and die at ~1000.
A neat feature addition would be a configurable minimum amount of open tabs before tab discarding kicks in.
- Xếp hạng 5 trong số 5bởi A FF User, 5 năm trước<3 :P :B ;D *** REQUESTS PLEASE! *** ;D :B :P <3
#1. OPEN TAB IN DISCARDED TAB IN CONTEXT MENU! :D
#2. EXCLUDE PINNED TABS OPTION! (ON/OFF)
#3. RESTORE HIBERNATED TAB ONLY AFTER CLICKING BUTTON (LIKE 'GREAT SUSPENDER' IN CHROME).
#4. DISABLE/ENABLE AUTO DISCARD FEATURE!
#5. INVERT WHITELIST OPTION! i.e. ONLY DISCARD THESE DOMAINS...
#6. PLEASE COPY FEATURES FROM "THE GREAT SUSPENDER" @ CHROME :DPhản hồi của nhà phát triển
đã đăng 5 năm trước"Open Tab in Discard Tab" has been added to the latest release. - Xếp hạng 5 trong số 5bởi ReachesHigh, 6 năm trướcThis extension works flawlessly! The only problem is that there is no option to keep pinned tabs open, and that would be an amazing feature. An even better option would be to allow certain tabs to remain loaded by clicking some option on them. Overall, a great and lightweight plugin though!
