关于此扩展
Visilant is a simple and lightweight browser extension that helps you stay cautious when visiting unfamiliar sites. Instead of blocking suspicious websites, it tracks which sites you visit frequently — and warns you if you interact with a new (for you) or rarely visited site. Visilant doesn’t declare a site safe or unsafe — it simply provides useful reminders so you remain in control.
Why Use Visilant?
Most phishing sites and scams originate from sites you have never visited before. They often appear to be genuine — using similar names or designs to deceive you. However, there’s one trait they cannot fake: your personal browsing history. If a site is unfamiliar, you’re more likely to make a mistake or fall for a trick. This is where Visilant comes in handy.
How It Works
Visilant tracks how frequently you visit each website. When you’re about to enter or copy information on a site you rarely visit, a warning appears. This prompt encourages you to pause and consider: “Do I trust this site?”
Visilant doesn’t block anything — it merely provides a visual reminder to exercise caution. The choice is always yours.
Key Features
- Visit Counter: Displays the number of times you’ve visited the current site.
- Smart Warnings: Alerts you if you begin entering or copying data on a rarely visited site.
- Visual Cues: The extension’s icon can change color (red for unfamiliar sites) and show the number of visits.
- Fully Customizable: You decide when and how warnings appear — from setting visit thresholds to choosing alert styles.
Who Is Visilant For?
Visilant is ideal for anyone seeking additional online security — especially on unfamiliar websites. No expertise is required; the extension works silently in the background without interfering with your usual browsing.
What Threats It Helps Detect
- Phishing and Clone Sites: Imitations of genuine websites that attempt to steal passwords and other data.
- Similar URLs: Scam sites with names like “paypa1.com” instead of “paypal.com.”
What Visilant Does Not Do
- It does not block malicious websites.
- It does not use external threat lists or antivirus databases.
- It does not track your activity or transmit your data.
Getting Started
1. Install the extension.
2. (Recommended) Pin the Visilant icon to your browser’s toolbar so it’s always visible.
3. Click the Visilant icon to open the settings.
4. Customize the extension to your preferences — adjust warnings, appearance, and threshold values.
5. (Recommended) Import your browser history so Visilant knows which sites you visit frequently, reducing false alerts.
Personalization Options
- Visit Threshold: Specify how many visits are needed for a site to be considered “familiar” (default is 10).
- Alert Types: Choose when alerts appear — when entering text, copying, or both.
- Notification Style: Select simple pop-ups, browser notifications, both, or disable them entirely.
- Appearance: Customize how the visit counter is displayed or how the icon changes color.
- Language Selection: Supports English, Russian, and Ukrainian.
Privacy – Above All
Visilant is an open-source extension that runs entirely within your browser. It never transmits your data:
- Your browsing history remains only on your device.
- There are no external servers or accounts involved.
- It only requests the permissions necessary for its operation — nothing extra.
Important to Know
Visilant is not a full antivirus or security tool. It does not scan for viruses, block trackers, or check downloads. It is focused solely on you — and on how familiar you are with the current site. It serves as an excellent additional layer of awareness, especially when combined with your vigilance and standard browser security features.
Possible Limitations
- Its effectiveness depends on your behavior — if you ignore the warnings, it won’t help.
- It won’t detect phishing sites that you have already visited more times than the set threshold.
- Secure sites might be marked as “unfamiliar” simply because you haven’t visited them before or visit them infrequently.
- If a malicious site blocks the warning script (theoretically possible), the only signals will be the red icon or visit counter on the extension, so ensure that the icon remains pinned to your browser toolbar.
