I switched to the new one but now the desktop app is telling me my add-on is still outdated? If this is what's to come I'm switching back to being my own password manager.

It sounds like there might be a sync issue between the add-on and desktop app. Please reinstall the latest Firefox add-on and ensure the desktop app is updated as well.
