- The 'old' Print-Edit was for me one of the most useful and accomplished FF add-ons. Given the reviews here I have NOT (so ignore the 3 stars - just entered as a neutral rating because field is required) tried the WE version because it is obvious it has some significant problems but it is also equally obvious these problems stem not from the add-on developer but from FF itself, as the FF developers increasingly lock down FF into a sort of paranoid uber secure - well, what? FF used to be all about the ability to customize it to one's liking but that ability is all but gone. I'm seriously thinking about what other browser to use (WIndows) but the field is limited and unattractive: Chrome (bloatware), IE (thanks but no thanks), etc.
Which leaves FF. So isn't the thing that we should be berating FF for its regressive changes rather than having a go at Print Edit's developer, who is doing his best under trying circumstances not of his own making?
Oh, and by the way, any FF supporters out there who say the current FF is better and/or why would I not want a more secure FF: the answer is I want adequate security, not Fort Knox.
Edit: DW-dev: thanks for your response. Seems I can't add a response under yours so mine will have to go here, as an edit. The three stars remain because, as I said, the FFFs (roll your own on what the third F stands for) require an assessment so I went for average/neutral.
My 'review' was more about WE = less functionality and flexibility and applies particularly to valuable but complex add-ons like yours, hence saying it here.
A bit of background: I was trying to edit your code to see if I could get the Save PDF button to send the edited html stream to wkhtmtopdf, with a view to achieving the Holy Grail of saving an edited page with active embedded links (which wkhtmltopdf can do, at least for unedited pages). I know this has come up before, and your reply if I remember was that saving to PDF was a secondary function and just used an internal FF PDF routine to do the save. I then came up against the FF xpi validation/signing restrictions and decided life was too short, even though there is a way of disabling signing verification by using two short js config files. But doing that probably really does leave the doors open to all sorts of nasties.
I currently use a custom button to send the url of the page (so it's the whole page) to wkhtmltopdf and it outputs a tolerable or better pdf with active embedded links over 90% of the time. But it is always the whole page, so often there is unnecessary bloat. If Print-Edit could do the same thing with the edited html that would be truly awesome!开发者回应
发布于 7 年前A reasonable assessment without trying Print Edit WE !!
Looking at all of the reviews, the negative points raised were:
1. Two-stage initiation sequence. Option to skip preparation stage in Print Edit WE 20.0
2. Duplicating original tab may lose some information. Necessary for integrity.
3. Page Breaks shortcut key (#) not working. Fixed in Print Edit WE 20.0.
4. Preview button didn't work. Fixed with Firefox 56.
5. Save As PDF didn't work. Fixed with Firefox 56.
6. Fix Page Breaks command missing. Will be added in next version.
7. Cannot edit Mozilla Add-ons web pages. Mozilla restriction.
8. Permissions. The original Print Edit had greater permissions.
Points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 have been fixed. Points 7 & 8 are facts of life. - 评分 5 / 5来自 Firefox 用户 13061321, 7 年前Will those of you that gave 3 stars or less because this replacement doesn't meet the expectations you had, get a perspective!!
The guy had a brilliant solution. His solution was broken by Firefox's changes (again even Firefox is not to blame because they changed due to technology landscape change).
So what morons can not see the clear distinction that this is a different product and it is in its infancy. Start by being grateful that he's making a new product for you ingrate idiots. I'd say you have more brains than the average bear because you use Firefox but sadly various neurons in your brain are fairly damaged and you're unable to see the bigger/fuller picture of this situation.
You should all be ashamed and apologize and correct your ratings.
Other more intelligent users please see this rating and take a few seconds write your own. Hopefully a more thoughtful one thanking the guy for his efforts. He's not even asking for donations, for heavens' sake!!!
For all you whiners about more permissions, read his response. He has addressed it. Undo your stupid knee jerk reactions of ratings someone's community effort low because you're too lazy to ask or read.
I see other great plug-ins get slammed by idiots but I've tried to ignore... this one just took the cake in how many dumb and lazy ingrates actually wrote about it.
Mr. or Ms. Author of this plug-in, this is my way of saying thank you for your creation. I love the old version and I'm sure this one will be excellent soon. - Using the old Print Edit. Went to this due to Firefox screwing us over with their new code, making old add-ons incompatible. This new version is worthless. No edit capability I can find, which is the reason I added it in place of the old version which doesn't work like it used to. I have tried adding and deleting it several times, tried all combinations of options I can think of. If I allow "preparing" it locks up Firefox.
REVISED REVIEW AND RATING!!!
Received follow up info from developer and along with deleting another add-on that appears to have been interfering with Print Edit WE; there are a couple of non-intuitive things that have to happen. You MUST add the Print Edit WE icon to the toolbar. With the old Print Edit I went directly into Print Edit from Firefox Print Preview. With Print Edit WE you click the Print Edit WE icon. If you go to Print Edit WE Options and enable the “Skip prepare stage ...” option. It then goes directly into the edit mode in a new tab. If you don't enable that option, you have to click the Print Edit WE icon again when it changes to also say "EDIT". You will still be taken to a new tab. The Print Edit WE toolbar is now inside the tab window at the top. To print without this toolbar showing up in your print, click the Print Edit WE icon and the toolbar disappears.
Kudos to this developer for his help and assistance in leading me back to the functionality I was used to having. Print Edit was the easiest and best add-on I had found for use in Firefox. Print Edit WE matches up with the old Print Edit extremely well.
I use Print Edit WE to clean up articles and tips from woodworking web pages (and other sources) to create a pdf file using CutePDF Printer and to save these web pages to a folder without having the possibility of the web page being no longer available a few years later. I had had some web pages saved from probably ten years ago in an obsolete (?) format that was hard to open, and some I never could open..开发者回应
发布于 7 年前Print Edit WE has nearly all of the editing features of the original Print Edit.
If you disable the 'Skip prepare stage...' option, you will need to click on the toolbar button, and then (when the 'PREP' badge appears on the button) click the button again to start editing.

The few implementation options still available then get presented to users as "new" permissions that they must agree to. Never mind that the XUL version had MUCH more control over Firefox, yet nobody complained.
It makes sense that Print Edit WE makes a copy of the current page–so you don't have to refresh after saving or printing. The problem is that many sites get their content from AJAX and don't update the POST data correctly in PrintEdit's copy. This can probably be fixed if you are willing to share the details with the dev.
Frankly, I'm super impressed and amazed that DW-dev got Print Edit to work under WE at all. Extension developers like him tend to do this stuff in their spare time. The least you can do is bear with him during the transition. - 评分 1 / 5来自 jajajajajaja...., 7 年前Dude...
Hell of a lot of permissions you are asking for:
This add-on can:
Access your data for all websites
Download files and read and modify the browser’s download history
Display notifications to you
Access browser tabs
Access browser activity during navigation
I won't be upgrading my Print Edit only for this reason.
I need my Print Edit as it is and you need to clarify why you need all these permissions.开发者回应
发布于 7 年前Legacy add-ons, such as the original Print Edit, had greater permissions than Print Edit WE.
The permission messages that you see when you install an add-on are generated by Firefox. These permission messages are based on the permissions specified in the add-on manifest file. These permission messages are broad-brush and do not give a detailed insight into the operations performed by an add-on.
In summary:
- Print Edit WE only asks for the permissions it needs to perform its functions.
- Print Edit WE saves the configured options in your Firefox profile on your computer.
- Print Edit WE (when you use Save As HMTL or Save As PDF) saves the page you have edited in the location you choose on your computer.
- Print Edit WE does not send any data to the developer or to third parties. - I am using this for the first time, and it is proving to be very useful, BUT there is one obvious thing that I am sure it can do, but I cannot find how to do it.
So as I cut out stuff I do not want to print, the number of pages should get fewer, BUT NOT ALWAYS. I use the properties function to see that there are hard page breaks that are preventing the reduction of number of pages.
I have tried different ways to get rid of the hard page breaks, but have not been successful.
Can you please explain in SIMPLEST WAY POSSIBLE how to get rid of all the original page breaks. Need very detailed, step-by-step explanation please. Thank you!! - 评分 1 / 5来自 Firefox 用户 13330898, 7 年前Sorry, but I haven't even downloaded Print Edit WE, because I don't think Mozilla, as an independent organization which is keen on personal security/privacy, should be asking for all these permissions:
******************
Permissions
Some add-ons ask for permission to perform certain functions (example: a tab management add-on will ask permission to access your browser’s tab system).
Since you’re in control of your Firefox, the choice to grant or deny these requests is yours. Accepting permissions does not inherently compromise your browser’s performance or security, but in some rare cases risk may be involved.
This add-on can:
Access your data for all websites
Download files and read and modify the browser’s download history
Display notifications to you
Access browser tabs
Access browser activity during navigation
********************
If/when the permissions are cut to ONLY those strictly necessary for printing the page you're on, I might reconsider开发者回应

When I try to edit a web page, not all of the page will disappear when I highlight and Delete Except, etc. I can't seem to get the edited part to move to the top and to the left. I end up with a lot of dead space on top and on the left, which makes it basically unusable. Also, I have Yahoo mail. I used to be able to pull up the print page from yahoo mail, then "Print Edit" from the new print page. I realize there is a ""Format" option, but it's in a format that non-techies like me can't understand. Also, the "Delete Except" unrestricted seems to wipe everything off the screen. I'm using Firefox 56.0 (64 bit).
- 评分 2 / 5来自 Firefox 用户 13285613, 8 年前Some objects / icons on the page are buggy, they don't show up on print preview. Some functions are missing / broken. Web Style function does not seem to work. I honestly don't understand why it has to reload the web page on a new tab to start editing, as some sites do not allow this (reloading a page conflicts with current active session).
It's pointless to write all the issues here, because this add-on used to work just fine, and i got my job done at some point. Compare to non-WE version, this add-on is simply useless, as in "no better than the browser's built-in print preview". All i want is to keep everything same from the non-WE version, but no. What happened? - Much less intuitive than old version. I found left click on the icon seemed the easiest way to go. One problem I've not been able to solve is that the print preview and thus the printed version has the editing boxes across the top. (Select, Hide, Delete ....etc)
Edit: Tried it again and the boxes not there.
FF56.0 (64 bit) Rating 5* Thanks for rapid response开发者回应
发布于 8 年前If you are using Firefox 55 or earlier, then the 'Preview' button on the Print Edit WE toolbar opens the 'Print' dialog, rather than switching to Firefox's print preview window. In this case, you will have to open Firefox's print preview window using 'File > Print Preview' on the Firefox main menu bar. Before doing that, click on the Print Edit WE button to suspend editing, and the Print Edit WE toolbar in the page will be hidden.
If you are using Firefox 56 or later, the the 'Preview' button on the Print Edit WE toolbar switches to Firefox's print preview window. 开发者回应
发布于 8 年前The 'Save As PDF' menu command is only available with Firefox 56 or later versions.
The 'Preview' button on the Print Edit WE toolbar will switch to the Firefox print preview window, if you are using Firefox 56 or later version. Otherwise it will open the Firefox Print dialog.
When you click on the toolbar button to suspend editing, the Print Edit WE toolbar should be removed - that is the whole point of suspending editing!
Print Preview can be accessed by right-clicking on the toolbar button, or by using File > Print Preview on the Firefox main menu bar, or by putting the Firefox Print button on the toolbar.- My first experience with the WE version - trying to save its add-on page as a PDF - was very disappointing, to say the least. And that's why I've given it a very "ordinary" 3 star rating.
But before getting the timely warning that the old version of Print Edit ("PE") won't work with the upcoming Firefox version 57.0, and for more than a year since first discovering it, I've used PE every time I've wanted to save a web page, rather than just its URL - so maybe up to a dozen times a day. PE is far and away the best tool I've found for this purpose.
Just as well I haven't uninstalled the old version yet, so I had already used PE to create a "ready reference" PDF of the Print Edit WE add-on page. This page was the first time I've seen a clear explanation of what "Text Pieces" is for (but that might just be my bad, for not looking in the right place sooner).
Now, I can't wait for Firefox 57.0, which may at last fix the horrendous memory leaks we've been experiencing for at least nine months. But please tell us WHY can't Print Edit WE work to document the following special pages for Firefox:
. >>> about:, moz-extension:, addons.mozilla.org <<< .
(and similar pages for Chrome)?开发者回应
发布于 8 年前Print Edit WE uses the new Firefox WebExtensions API's, which are the same as the Chrome extension API's.
These API's do not allow extensions to perform certain types of operations on a few pages, which are either browser administration pages or web store pages, specifically:
- about:
- moz-extension:
- chrome:
- chrome-extension:
- https://chrome.google.com/webstore - Still great functionality, but have to agree with the earlier review that the multi-step process is a pain in the neck. I read the developer's response to the post but it adds unneeded (in my view) complexity to what was a seamless edit/preview/print process in the prior version of the add-on.
- 评分 2 / 5来自 CookieRevised, 8 年前An addon everyone really needs.
This said, with this new WebExtensions version, the UI of this addons is REALLY confusing. I certainly do not like the two/three step method at all. I rather prefer the 'old' interface of the classic Add-on version instead of this strange and non-intuitive WebExtension version.
Uninstalled, and went back to the classic version.... :(
(going to disable updates on FF56 anyways)
EDIT, after reply from creator:
- I really do not see the need for a (forced) prep-stage... If I want something to prep before printing/editing I would have done that already on the page itself, before activating the print edit, because that is what I would like to print edit. It is a useless step and unfortunatly can't be 'disabled'.
- Duplicating the tab: I could live with that, but I rather want to go directly into the dedicated print preview window from the File menu, like before. Makes much more sense and has less steps to go thru.
- Also, I could Print Edit any previously saved page before with the classic version. So, no benefits there either.
- The only benefit I see with this new approach is that you're able to edit multiple pages at the same time. But that is something I never have the need for and thus never do.
Conclussion: compared to the classic addon, it has far more downsides than improvements for me. Still I appreciate the effort and skills though!
If you would re-introduce the File>Print Edit again, to go directly to the dedicated print preview window, I might reconsider. 开发者回应
发布于 8 年前Access browser tabs - to allow the page Title and URL to be accessed.
Access browser activity during navigation - to allow detection of navigation to a different page, so that the toolbar icon can be faded if it is a special page that cannot be edited.
Download files - to allow the Save As HTML and Save As PDF menu commands to work.- I'm really counting down when mozilla share drops down from 6% to less than 1. They can shove v57 quantum up their aass.

This addon worked perfectly earlier (v56 n prev. v). Now not only it is unbearably slow starting up, it saves the webpage as corrputed pdfs.

REPLY TO DEV.:
I'm using Firefox 57.0b3 (32-bit) on Windows 10 Pro version 1703 build 15063. I've been a long-time user and fan of this addon and I'm doing exactly what you described but the saved page as pdf turns out to be a corrupted file such that Adobe Reader/Firefox/Chrome fails to open/read it.
Thank you for replying. You are a great dev and have been of great help all these years.开发者回应
发布于 8 年前If you use Print Edit WE 19.0 (or later version) with Firefox 56.0, then saving to PDF works correctly on Windows and Linux.
However, Mozilla have introduced a bug in Firefox 57 beta that prevents 'Save As PDF' working correctly.
There is now a fix in Nightly 58 that resolves this issue, and this fix should be uplifted to Firefox 57 beta before it is released.
